Updating Cluster Software
Updating Cluster Software
Caution This operation will cause you to lose network connectivity for 15–30 minutes;
therefore, you should plan these software updates for a low network-utiliza-
tion time.
When updating software on an HA cluster, keep the following in mind:
You cannot update the software on cluster participants by synchronizing
them with an updated master because both of the modules in a cluster
must be running the same software version when the cluster in formed.
The Synchronize Now command will not copy the new software image to
the participant. Instead, you must update each module separately.
You can download and install the new software image at one time and
then later reboot the module to complete the installation.
When updating the software, you will complete the following steps:
1. Back up the master’s startup configuration.
2. Remove the participant from the cluster (using the no high-availability
command with the delete-cluster-data option).
3. Update the master’s software.
4. Update the participant’s software.
5. Rejoin the participant to the cluster.
Note It is essential that you complete the steps in the order listed and include the
delete-cluster-data option when removing the participant from the cluster. If
you do not, you may inadvertently create problems with the HA cluster. For
example, if you do not include the delete-cluster-data option when removing
the participant, both HA members will retain the cluster’s IP settings, creating
an address conflict on your network. If you boot the participant first (after
updating its software), it will become the cluster master. If you used the delete-
cluster-data option when removing the participant and then boot it first, the
master’s startup-config will be erased when it joins the cluster.
Back up the Master’s Startup Configuration
In this step you will save a backup copy of the master’s startup-config. This
way, in the event that your master loses it’s configuration, you can restore to
the saved configuration.
