xl Module
The ProCurve Wireless Edge Services xl Module transforms a ProCurve
Switch 5300xl into a wireless services-enabled switch. Together with one or
more radio ports (RPs), a wireless services-enabled Switch 5300xl supports a
wireless network.
Each Wireless Edge Services xl Module can support up to 12 RPs with its
default license and up to 36 RPs (72 radios) total. Each RP radio can support
up to 64 stations. A wireless network can include several modules, and you
can join two modules in a group for redundancy.
A wireless network can provide these services:
Association—Mobile users must be able to locate and connect to the
system.
Authentication—Typically, users and the wireless access provider should
authenticate each other so that each knows that it is connecting to the
correct peer.
Encryption—Wireless network traffic may be encrypted to protect it from
interception.
Bridging—Traffic crossing from the wireless to the wired network should
be placed in the proper subnet, or virtual LAN (VLAN), and appropriately
controlled.
As the interface between the wireless and the wired network, the Wireless
Edge Services xl Module manages these services. Among other functions, it:
receives traffic from wireless stations via RPs, and places this traffic into
the correct VLAN to be forwarded into the wired network
manages a set of wireless LANs (WLANs), each of which is identified by
a service set identifier (SSID), and defines various network and security
policies
manages users’ 802.1X or Web authentication to a RADIUS server
applies settings such as access control lists (ACLs) and quality-of-service
(QoS) settings to traffic received from wireless stations
adopts connecting RPs and automatically deploys configurations to them
collects information about the wireless network and controls self-healing
functions such as neighbor recovery and interference avoidance
