Customer self repair HP products are designed with many Customer Self Repair (CSR) parts to minimize repair time and allow for greater flexibility in performing defective parts replacement. If during the diagnosis period HP (or HP service providers or service partners) identifies that the repair can be accomplished by the use of a CSR part, HP will ship that part directly to you for replacement. There are two categories of CSR parts: • Mandatory—Parts for which customer self repair is mandatory.

Removal and replacement procedures Required tools You need the following items for some procedures: • T-15 Torx screwdriver (provided inside the access panel) • HP Insight Diagnostics software ("HP Insight Diagnostics" on page 87) Safety considerations Before performing service procedures, review all the safety information. Preventing electrostatic discharge To prevent damaging the system, be aware of the precautions you need to follow when setting up the system or handling parts.
Symbols on equipment The following symbols may be placed on equipment to indicate the presence of potentially hazardous conditions. This symbol indicates the presence of hazardous energy circuits or electric shock hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel. WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury from electric shock hazards, do not open this enclosure. Refer all maintenance, upgrades, and servicing to qualified personnel. This symbol indicates the presence of electric shock hazards.
• Press and release the Power On/Standby button. This method initiates a controlled shutdown of applications and the OS before the server blade enters standby mode. • Press and hold the Power On/Standby button for more than 4 seconds to force the server blade to enter standby mode. This method forces the server blade to enter standby mode without properly exiting applications and the OS. It provides an emergency shutdown method if an application stops responding.
3. Remove the server blade. 4. Place the server blade on a flat, level work surface. WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the drives and the internal system components to cool before touching them. CAUTION: To prevent damage to electrical components, properly ground the server blade before beginning any installation procedure. Improper grounding can cause ESD. Installing a server blade 1. Remove the connector covers.
2. Prepare the server blade for installation. 3. Install the server blade. Access panel (A-side) To remove the component: 1. Power down the server blade (on page 28). 2. Remove the server blade (on page 29). 3. Press the access panel release button, and then slide the access panel to the rear. 4. Remove the access panel. WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the drives and the internal system components to cool before touching them.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to electrical components, properly ground the server blade before beginning any installation procedure. Improper grounding can cause ESD. To replace the component: 1. Place the access panel on top of the server blade. Allow the panel to extend past the rear of the server blade approximately 1 cm (0.25 in). 2. Slide the access panel to the closed position. Access panel (B-side) To remove the component: 1. Power down the server blade (on page 28). 2.
6. Unroute the SAS/SATA cable. 7. Remove the left DIMM baffle. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Right DIMM baffle To remove the component: 1. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Heatsink blank To remove the component: 1. Power down the server blade (on page 28). 2.
4. Remove the heatsink blank. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Mezzanine card (A-side) Optional mezzanine cards enable network connectivity or provide Fibre Channel support. For mezzanine card locations, see "System board components (A-side) (on page 92)." Because mezzanine cards are supported on multiple server blade models, the mezzanine card may have captive screws that are not required to secure it to the server blade.
4. Remove the mezzanine card. To replace the component: CAUTION: To prevent damage to the server blade, apply pressure over the mezzanine connector when installing the mezzanine card. Do not apply pressure to the edges of the card. 1. Install the mezzanine card. Press down on the connector to seat the board. 2. Install the access panel (A-side) ("Access panel (A-side)" on page 31). Mezzanine card (B-side) Optional mezzanine cards enable network connectivity or provide Fibre Channel support.
Because mezzanine cards are supported on multiple server blade models, the mezzanine card may have captive screws that are not required to secure it to the server blade. When installing a mezzanine card in this server blade, only two captive screws are required. To remove the component: 1. Power down the server blade (on page 28). 2. Remove the server blade (on page 29). 3. Remove the access panel (B-side) ("Access panel (B-side)" on page 32). 4.
1. Install the mezzanine card. Press down on the connector to seat the board. 2. Install the interposer board ("Interposer board" on page 47). 3. Install the access panel (B-side) ("Access panel (B-side)" on page 32). Hard drive blank Remove the hard drive blank. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Hard drive IMPORTANT: Hot-plug capability and drive LED support are only available when a supported optional controller is installed in the server.
To remove the component: 1. Back up all data on the hard drive. 2. Power down the server blade (on page 28). CAUTION: To prevent improper cooling and thermal damage, do not operate the server unless all bays are populated with either a component or a blank. 3. Remove the hard drive. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. When adding hard drives to the server blade, observe the following general guidelines: • The system automatically sets all drive numbers.
4. Disconnect the signal cable and the power cable from the SAS backplane. 5. Loosen the thumbscrews. 6. Remove the screws from the side of the server blade. 7. Remove the front panel/hard drive cage assembly. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Front panel/hard drive cage assembly (B-side) To remove the component: 1. Power down the server blade (on page 28). 2. Remove the server blade (on page 29). 3. Remove the access panel (B-side) ("Access panel (B-side)" on page 32).
7. Remove the front panel/hard drive cage assembly. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Battery-backed write cache procedures Two types of procedures are provided for the cache module option: • • Removal and replacement of failed components.
4. If installed, remove the mezzanine card on mezzanine connector 3. 5. Locate the cache module ("System board components (A-side)" on page 92). 6. Disconnect the battery cable. 7. Remove the cache module. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure.

Remove the component: o Left DIMM baffle o Right DIMM baffle IMPORTANT: The battery pack might have a low charge when installed. In this case, a POST error message is displayed when the server blade is powered up, indicating that the battery pack is temporarily disabled. No action is necessary on your part.
Recovering data from the battery-backed write cache If the server blade fails, use the following procedure to recover data temporarily stored in the BBWC. CAUTION: Before starting this procedure, read the information about protecting against electrostatic discharge ("Preventing electrostatic discharge" on page 27). 1. 2. Perform one of the following: o Set up a recovery server blade station using an identical server blade model. Do not install any internal drives or BBWC in this server blade.
5. Remove the interposer board. IMPORTANT: To properly seat the connectors, press the back side of the connectors firmly in the locations indicated on the component. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Heatsink (A-side) WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the drives and the internal system components to cool before touching them. To remove the component: 1. Power down the server blade (on page 28). 2. Remove the server blade (on page 29). 3.
7. Remove the heatsink. To replace the component: 1. Clean the old thermal grease from the processor with the alcohol swab. Allow the alcohol to evaporate before continuing. 2. Remove the thermal interface protective cover from the heatsink. CAUTION: Orient the heatsink as indicated in the procedure. Otherwise, you cannot install the hard drive cage.
3. Install the heatsink. 4. Install the front panel/hard drive cage assembly (A-side) ("Front panel/hard drive cage assembly (A-side)" on page 42). 5. Install the hard drives ("Hard drive" on page 41). 6. Install the hard drive blanks ("Hard drive blank" on page 41). 7. Install the access panel (A-side) ("Access panel (A-side)" on page 31). 8. Install the server blade ("Installing a server blade" on page 30). 9. Power up the server blade.
7. Remove the heatsink. To replace the component: 1. Clean the old thermal grease from the processor with the alcohol swab. Allow the alcohol to evaporate before continuing. 2. Install the server blade ("Installing a server blade" on page 30). 9. Power up the server blade.
6. Remove the front panel/hard drive cage assembly (A-side) ("Front panel/hard drive cage assembly (A-side)" on page 42). 7. Remove the heatsink (A-side) ("Heatsink (A-side)" on page 48). 8. Open the processor locking lever and the processor socket retaining bracket. 9. Using the processor tool, remove the processor from the system board: a. Line up the processor tool, ensuring the locking lever graphic on the tool is oriented correctly. b.
10. Carefully rotate the tool, and then push in and release the tabs to secure the processor in the tool. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the processor, do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area. To replace the component: 1. Carefully insert the processor into the processor installation tool. Handle the processor by the edges only, and do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area.
2. Be sure the tool is oriented correctly. Align the processor installation tool with the socket, and then install the processor. THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. CAUTION: THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. To avoid damage to the system board: • Never install or remove a processor without using the processor installation tool. • Do not touch the processor socket contacts.
3. Press and hold the tabs on the processor installation tool to separate it from the processor, and then remove the tool. 4. Close the processor socket retaining bracket and the processor locking lever. CAUTION: Be sure to close the processor socket retaining bracket before closing the processor locking lever. The lever should close without resistance. Forcing the lever closed can damage the processor and socket, requiring system board replacement. 5.
6. Apply all the grease to the top of the processor in the following pattern to ensure even distribution. CAUTION: Orient the heatsink as indicated in the procedure. Otherwise, you cannot install the hard drive cage. CAUTION: When tightening the heatsink screws, first tighten the front screw four to five turns, tighten the back screw completely, and then finish tightening the front screw. 7. Install the heatsink. 8.
Processor (B-side) WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the drives and the internal system components to cool before touching them. CAUTION: To prevent possible server blade malfunction and damage to the equipment, multiprocessor configurations must contain processors with the same part number. CAUTION: The heatsink thermal interface media is not reusable and must be replaced if the heatsink is removed from the processor after it has been installed.
c. 10. Release the tabs, and then carefully lift the processor and tool straight up. Carefully rotate the tool, and then push in and release the tabs to secure the processor in the tool. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the processor, do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area. To replace the component: CAUTION: Failure to completely open the processor locking lever prevents the processor from seating during installation, leading to hardware damage.
1. Open the processor locking lever and the processor socket retaining bracket. Do not remove the processor socket cover. IMPORTANT: Be sure the processor remains inside the processor installation tool. 2. If the processor has separated from the installation tool, carefully re-insert the processor in the tool. Handle the processor by the edges only, and do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area.
3. Align the processor installation tool with the socket, and then install the processor. THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. CAUTION: THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. To avoid damage to the system board: • Never install or remove a processor without using the processor installation tool. • Do not touch the processor socket contacts. • Do not tilt or slide the processor when lowering the processor into the socket.
4. Press the tabs on the processor installation tool to separate it from the processor, and then remove the tool. 5. Close the processor socket retaining bracket and the processor locking lever. The processor socket cover is automatically ejected. Remove the cover. CAUTION: Be sure to close the processor socket retaining bracket before closing the processor locking lever. The lever should close without resistance.

System board (A-side) To remove the component: 1. Power down the server blade (on page 28). 2. Remove the server blade (on page 29). 3. Remove all hard drives ("Hard drive" on page 41). 4. Remove all hard drive blanks ("Hard drive blank" on page 41). 5. Remove the access panel (B-side) ("Access panel (B-side)" on page 32). 6. Remove the interposer board ("Interposer board" on page 47). 7.
a. Line up the processor tool, ensuring the locking lever graphic on the tool is oriented correctly. b. Press in on the plastic tabs, and then place the tool on the processor. c. 22. Release the tabs, and then carefully lift the processor and tool straight up. Carefully rotate the tool, and then push in and release the tabs to secure the processor in the tool. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the processor, do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area.
23. Remove the failed system board.
To replace the component: 1. Install the spare system board. CAUTION: Failure to completely open the processor locking lever prevents the processor from seating during installation, leading to hardware damage.
2. Open the processor locking lever and the processor socket retaining bracket. Do not remove the processor socket cover. IMPORTANT: Be sure the processor remains inside the processor installation tool. 3. If the processor has separated from the installation tool, carefully re-insert the processor in the tool. Handle the processor by the edges only, and do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area.

CAUTION: When tightening the heatsink screws, first tighten the front screw four to five turns, tighten the back screw completely, and then finish tightening the front screw. 10. 15. Loosen the six system board captive thumbscrews and the front handle captive thumbscrew, and then rotate the front handle to the vertical position. 16. Using the front and rear handles, lift the failed system board from the server blade.
To replace the component: 1. Raise the front handle to the vertical position, and then lower the spare system board into the server blade. 2. Lower the front handle, and then tighten the handle thumbscrew and the system board thumbscrews.
CAUTION: Failure to completely open the processor locking lever prevents the processor from seating during installation, leading to hardware damage. 3. Open the processor locking lever and the processor socket retaining bracket. Do not remove the processor socket cover. IMPORTANT: Be sure the processor remains inside the processor installation tool.
4. If the processor has separated from the installation tool, carefully re-insert the processor in the tool. Handle the processor by the edges only, and do not touch the bottom of the processor, especially the contact area.
5. Align the processor installation tool with the socket, and then install the processor. THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. CAUTION: THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. To avoid damage to the system board: • Never install or remove a processor without using the processor installation tool. • Do not touch the processor socket contacts. • Do not tilt or slide the processor when lowering the processor into the socket.
6. Press the tabs on the processor installation tool to separate it from the processor, and then remove the tool. 7. Close the processor socket retaining bracket and the processor locking lever. The processor socket cover is automatically ejected. Remove the cover. CAUTION: Be sure to close the processor socket retaining bracket before closing the processor locking lever. The lever should close without resistance.
10. Apply all the grease to the top of the processor in the following pattern to ensure even distribution. CAUTION: Orient the heatsink as indicated in the procedure. Otherwise, you cannot install the hard drive cage. CAUTION: When tightening the heatsink screws, first tighten the front screw four to five turns, tighten the back screw completely, and then finish tightening the front screw. 11. Install the heatsinks.

HP Insight Diagnostics HP Insight Diagnostics is a proactive server blade management tool, available in both offline and online versions, that provides diagnostics and troubleshooting capabilities to assist IT administrators who verify server blade installations, troubleshoot problems, and perform repair validation.
