3.7.0 HP StorageWorks MxDB-Oracle-HiAv installation and administration guide HP MxDB-Oracle-HiAv for Linux (AG513-96009, June 2009)

You can also use the -a option to add a node to the backup list. For example, the
following command adds node 10.10.60.16 as the third backup.
mxdb d PROD -a 10.10.60.16
Maintenance Mode
While a database is under the control of MxDB-Oracle-HiAv, you must start and stop
the database by stopping the entire Virtual Oracle Service. If you attempt a shutdown
using sqlplus / shutdown immediate, for example, the Virtual Oracle Service
will detect a down database and will immediately attempt to restart it.
Starting and stopping the entire Virtual Oracle Service is the correct action under
normal circumstances. However, consider the case when a DBA needs to apply a
patch. The DBA needs to shut down and start up the database at will without the
Virtual Oracle Service taking any actions. If you shut down the Virtual Oracle Service
to stop the database, you cannot connect to the database. If you start the Virtual
Oracle Service, you cannot stop the database.
To work around this situation, MxDB-Oracle-HiAv provides Maintenance Mode.
When a Virtual Oracle Service is in Maintenance Mode, the following conditions
are true:
Probes always return success.
The virtual host associated with the Virtual Oracle Service is active.
This configuration allows you to stop the database without the monitor probe
associated with the Virtual Oracle Service detecting failure and you can still connect
to the virtual host address (that is, the listener is up).
NOTE:
Be sure to take the database out of Maintenance Mode before stopping the database
oracle service. Other database actions via mxdb or the GUI should not be performed
while the database is in Maintenance Mode.
GUI procedure
To place the Virtual Oracle Service into Maintenance Mode, click Start Maintenance.
