2 Overview Supported Upgrades Upgrades to HP Clustered File System 3.6.0and FS Option for Windows 3.6.0 are supported only from the 3.4.x versions of these products. If you are running a version of these products earlier than 3.4.x, you will first need to upgrade to the 3.4.x releases and then upgrade to 3.6.0. Supported Operating Systems The supported operating systems for HP Clustered File System 3.6.

Chapter 2: Overview 4 Upgrade Considerations Several product changes in HP Clustered File System 3.6.0 affect the upgrade procedure. Be sure to review the following information before starting the upgrade. Obtain a new license Before starting the upgrade process, follow the steps in the new Entitlement Certificate to obtain a license for the 3.6.0 code. There are no temporary licenses embedded in the 3.6.0 code, so you must obtain a new 3.6.0 license.

Chapter 2: Overview 5 • Notifiers. The built-in notifiers provided with previous releases of HP Clustered File System are no longer supported. Existing notifiers will continue to function until the last server is upgraded. At that point, the notifiers will be deleted from the configuration. If you are currently using notifiers, be sure to back up your notifier scripts. After the upgrade is complete, you will need to recreate the notifiers. • The stand-alone HP CFS Management Console provided with the 3.

Chapter 2: Overview 6 Back Up the Membership Partitions Use the mpdump command to back up the membership partitions. The following command backs up the partitions to the default backup location, %Program Files%\Hewlett-Packard\HP Clustered File System\conf\MP.backup.prev on the drive where you installed HP Clustered File System. The file will then be included when you back up the cluster configuration.

3 Rolling Upgrades NOTE: Before starting the upgrade process, follow the steps in the new Entitlement Certificate to obtain a license for the 3.6.0 code. There are no temporary licenses embedded in the 3.6.0 code, so you must obtain a new 3.6.0 license. By following the steps in the Entitlement Certificate, you will have all necessary components for the upgrade, which should allow you to more quickly complete the upgrade process.

Chapter 3: Rolling Upgrades 9 • If you need to install the 3.6.0 release in a different location, copy the backup configuration files (see “Back Up the Existing Cluster” on page 5) to that location before installing HP Clustered File System 3.6.0. Upgrade Considerations When upgrading HP Clustered File System, you should be aware of the following: • The server with the numerically highest primary IP address must be upgraded first.

Chapter 3: Rolling Upgrades 10 Rolling Upgrade Considerations You should be aware of the following when upgrading HP Clustered File System to the 3.6.0 release: • Servers can be upgraded one-at-a-time during the rolling upgrade. The server with the numerically highest primary IP address must be upgraded first. Then continue to upgrade the servers in descending order of IP address, with the server with the lowest primary IP address being upgraded last.

(Either issue the command net stop matrixserver from the Command Prompt, or stop the product via the Microsoft Management Console Services snap-in.) 2. Back up the cluster configuration on the server as described under “Back Up the Existing Cluster” on page 5. 3. Shut down the server. 4. Install the new version of the operating system. 5.

Be sure to copy the \conf directory back to its original location: %Program Files%\Hewlett-Packard\HP Clustered File System\conf. 12. Start the HP CFS Management Console and enter the login credentials for the server that you are upgrading. Click the down arrow on the Connect button to see the options, and then click on Configure. 13. Install the new license file.

Stop HP Clustered File System on the server to be upgraded. (Either issue the command net stop matrixserver from the Command Prompt, or stop the product via the Microsoft Management Console Services snap-in.) 2. Back up the cluster configuration as described under “Back Up the Existing Cluster” on page 5. 3.

If you upgraded the operating system, run the mxcheck utility provided with HP Clustered File System 3.6.0. This utility verifies that the server’s configuration meets the requirements for running HP Clustered File System. Insert the HP Clustered File System CD into the CD drive or go to the directory where you downloaded the product and then double-click the file mxcheck.exe.

Chapter 3: Rolling Upgrades 15 NOTE: If the Apply fails, verify that the FC switch ports are enabled for all of the servers. If the switch ports are enabled, check the Windows Disk Management MMC snap-in to determine whether the node can see the disks on the SAN. Also check the HBA driver. 17. When asked if you want to start the HP Clustered File System service, answer yes.

Chapter 4: Non-Rolling Upgrades 17 If you perform a custom installation of HP Clustered File System 3.6.0 and specify a new location for the cluster software, the Installer will not be able to locate the existing configuration files. To avoid this problem, take one of these steps: • If HP Clustered File System is currently installed in a custom location, install HP Clustered File System 3.6.0 in the same location. • If you need to install the 3.6.

Chapter 4: Non-Rolling Upgrades 18 • If you are upgrading to the 64-bit operating system, be sure to install the 64-bit version of the HBA driver and the 64-bit versions of HP Clustered File System and FS Option for Windows.

Chapter 4: Non-Rolling Upgrades 19 Upgrade Procedures There are two procedures: • Upgrade HP Clustered File System and reinstall the operating system. See page 18. • Upgrade HP Clustered File System without reinstalling the operating system. See page 22. Upgrade HP Clustered File System and Reinstall the OS To minimize overall downtime, divide your servers into two groups and then upgrade one group at a time while the other group runs the cluster.

Reinstall the operating system on each server in group B. 21. If you will be adding third-party MPIO software to the cluster, install it on each server in group B according to the product documentation. 22. On each server in group B, install a supported HBA driver. 23. Reboot the servers in group B. 24.

Chapter 4: Non-Rolling Upgrades 23 Upgrade HP Clustered File System Without Reinstalling the OS You can use one of the following methods to upgrade the cluster: • To minimize overall downtime, divide your servers into two groups and then upgrade one group at a time while the other group runs the cluster. The upgrade procedure assumes that the servers are divided into group A and group B. • Upgrade all servers at once. In the upgrade procedure, complete the steps for group A on all of the servers.

Chapter 4: Non-Rolling Upgrades 24 5. Uninstall the previous version of HP Clustered File System from each server in group A. Use Start > HP Clustered Gateway > Uninstall HP CFS. Select the checkbox to “Keep the existing HP Clustered File System configuration.” You will need to reboot the server when the “reboot” popup message appears. NOTE: Do not use the Add/Remove Programs option on the Control Panel to remove HP Clustered File System. This method will remove your cluster configuration.

Locate the file MxS_3.6.0..msi on the product CD or in the directory where you downloaded the software. Double-click on the MxS_3.6.0..msi file and run the Installation Wizard. To complete the installation, reboot the servers when directed by the popup message. 12. On each server in group A, install FS Option for Windows.

If the switch ports are enabled, check the Windows Disk Management MMC snap-in to determine whether the node can see the disks on the SAN. Also check the HBA driver. 18. On the Cluster Wide Configuration tab, stop HP Clustered File System on each server in group B. Also disable the HP Clustered File System service on the Microsoft Management Console Services snap-in. 19.

If you will be adding third-party MPIO software to the cluster, install it on each server in group B according to the product documentation. 26. On each server in group B, upgrade HBA drivers if necessary. 27. If necessary, reboot the servers in group B.

On the Cluster Wide Configuration tab, start HP Clustered File System on all of the servers in group B. When all servers in the cluster are operational, you can complete the appropriate post-upgrade steps described in Chapter 5.

5 Post-Upgrade Steps Changes Necessitated by the Upgrade After upgrading to the HP Clustered File System 3.6 release, you may need to make the following changes: • Replace membership partitions that are too small • Recreate notifiers • Recreate unstriped dynamic volumes • Remove custom setting for GcTrimLevel • Upgrade the stand-alone HP CFS Management Console Replace Membership Partitions That Are Too Small In HP Clustered File System 3.

Chapter 5: Post-Upgrade Steps 30 membership partitions are configured, the replacements can be done one-at-a-time while the cluster is online. If only one membership partition is configured, the cluster must be offline when the partition is replaced. See “Manage Membership Partitions” in the HP StorageWorks Clustered File System Administration Guide for more information. Recreate Notifiers If you previously used notifier scripts, you will need to recreate the notifiers. HP Clustered File System 3.

Chapter 5: Post-Upgrade Steps 31 on the filesystem. After the volume and the filesystem are recreated, you can manually restore the data from your backup. To recreate a concatenated dynamic volume, take these steps: 1. Back up the data on the volume. 2. Recreate the dynamic volume. On the HP CFS Management Console, select Storage > Dynamic Volume > Recreate and then choose the volume that you want to recreate. You can change or reorder the subdevices used for the volume if desired.

Chapter 5: Post-Upgrade Steps 32 Upgrade the HP CFS Management Console on Clients The stand-alone HP CFS Management Console must be upgraded to version 3.6.0 on any client systems currently running an earlier version of the console. The stand-alone console cannot be installed on a server running HP Clustered File System 3.6. (HP Clustered File System includes a built-in version of the HP CFS Management Console.) Complete these steps: 1.
