HP ProLiant ML310 G3 Storage Server Administration Guide (WSS R2 version, March 2006)

5 File serve r managemen t
This chapter begins by identifying new or improved le services in Windows Storage Server 2003 R 2. The
remainder of the chapter describes the many tasks and utilities that play a role in le server management.

Create LUN Wizard
Use the Create LUN Wizard to create a LUN (logical unit), which is used to allocate space on a storage
array. You can assign a ser ver to the LUN as you create it, or wait until you are ready to deploy the LUN.
Distributed File System
The Distributed File System (DFS) solution in Windows Storage Ser ver R2 provides s implied, fault-tolerant
access to les and WAN-friendly replication. DFS consists of two technologies:
DFS N amespaces, formerly known as Distributed File System, allows administrators to group
shared folders located on different servers and present them to users as a virtual tree of folders
known as a n
amespace. A namespace provides numerous benets, including increased
availabil
ity of data, load sharing, and simplied data migration.
DFS Replication, the successor to File Replication Service (FRS), is a new state-based, multi-master
replication engine that s upports scheduling and bandwidth throttling. DFS Replication uses a new
compression algorithm known as Remote D ifferential Compression (RDC). RDC is a diff over
the wire protocol that can be used to efciently update les over a limited-bandwidth network.
RDC d ete
cts insertions, removals, and rearrangements of data in les, enabling DFS Replication
to repli
cate on ly the deltas (changes) when les are updated.
The HP Storage Server Management Console provides access to DFS management tasks.
