This chapter is divided into two major parts:
Non-hot-plug devices — you must shut down the server power in order
to install the following options, upgrades, or replacements:
G Processors and memory
G Removable media drives
G SCSI drive cages
G PCI expansion boards
G External storage
Hot-plug devices — you can install the following hot-plug options,
upgrades, or replacements without shutting down the server power:
G Hot-plug Wide Ultra2 SCSI and Wide Ultra3 SCSI drives
G Hot-plug power supplies
G Hot-plug system fans
G Hot-plug drive fans
Accessing Non-Hot-Plug Devices
This section describes how to access the following:
Processors and memory
Removable media drive
SCSI drive cage
PCI expansion boards
External storage
To install options, upgrades, or replacements in these areas, you must first shut
down the server power.
CAUTION: If Wake-on-LAN is enabled, power off the unit and disconnect the
power cord when inserting or removing expansion cards to eliminate the
possibility of spurious signals on the power management pins. Each PCI slot has
a power management pin that can be used to wake up the system. The network
interface card (NIC) that ships with the ProLiant ML530 server, and other NICs
that support the PCI 2.2 specification, can use this pin to turn the unit on when a
magic packet arrives. Wake-on-LAN is disabled by default and can be enabled
by using the configuration utility.
