HP NetServer RS/12 SCSI Upgrade Guide
Installing a Second RS/12 SCSI Card
Installing a second RS/12 SCSI card in an HP Rack Storage/12 enclosure lets you change your configuration from
simplex configuration to either duplex or cluster configuration.
Simplex Configuration
In simplex configuration, one RS/12 card is installed in the slot 1 of the enclosure, and dip Switch 1 on the
management board is be set to the left, as viewed in Figure 1. Figure 2 shows slots 1 and 2.

Duplex Configuration
If two RS/12 SCSI cards are installed in the enclosure and dip Switch 1 on the management board is set to the left, as
viewed in Figure 1, the RS/12 is automatically configured in duplex configuration when it powers up. In duplex
configuration, the RS/12 disk drives are split between the two SCSI cards, and each card is connected to the drives in
its half of the enclosure. From the front of the enclosure, disk drives installed in the left half of the enclosure are
accessed by the card in slot 1. Disk drives installed in the right half of the enclosure are accessed by the card in slot 2.
Figure 2 shows slots 1 and 2.
Cluster Configuration
The RS/12 supports a cluster configuration in conjunction with supported software to allow either of the SCSI cards to
access all the disk drives in the enclosure. To prepare the enclosure for a cluster configuration, dip Switch 1 on the
management board must be set to the right, as viewed in Figure 1, before you turn on power to the enclosure. This
allows either SCSI card to access all the disk drives installed in the RS/12.
CAUTION You should not remove a failed or failing hot-swap component from the RS/12 until you are ready
to replace it with a working component. Removing a hot-swap component and leaving it
unreplaced can cause the unit to shut down within minutes from excessive temperature conditions.
