HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Administrator Guide (5697-0934, May 2011)

B Deploying VMware ESX Server with SVSP
For current information regarding VMware and SVSP, see the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization
Services Platform release notes.
To ensure proper deployment, the following sections must be followed in order. HP recommends
that you test this deployment in a test environment before using it in a production environment. The
ESXi 4.0 Configuration Guide is available at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/
vsp_40_esxi_server_config.pdf.
For additional VMware information, see the storage section in the VMware ESX Server 3i
Configuration Guide available at https://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3i_e/r35u2/
vi3_35_25_u2_3i_server_config.pdf. Information can also be found in the storage section of the
VMware ESXi 4.0 Configuration Guide, available at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/

Deployment overview
The basic supported setup includes two Data Path Modules (DPMs) and two VSM servers. From
the VMware side, the supported setup includes standalone VMware ESX servers and/or VMware
cluster with HA and DSR. These features ensure high availability and resource load balancing for
the entire VMware storage environment. It is highly recommended that you build an environment
that combines VMware cluster (HA+DSR) with at least two DPMs, two VSM servers, and two storage
systems (or one storage system with two controllers) as presented in the following diagram.
Deployment steps
Before actually configuring the environment it is very important to carefully plan the environment
and the deployment steps after taking all the requirements into consideration. The deployment steps
