HP StorageWorks SVSP Virtualization Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager Application Notes (5697-0319, March 2010)

Creating a recovery plan
NOTE:
In VMware terminology, the secondary site is referred to as the
recovery site
.
A recovery plan is the sequence of steps that are performed by Site Recovery Manager at the secondary
site when a true DR scenario occurs or when a DR plan is being tested. A recovery plan contains
protection groups from the primary site. Recall that the protection groups contain VMs. All of these
VMs will be recovered by the recovery plan.
1. Log on to the recovery site vCenter server.
2. In the main Site Recovery window, click Create in the Recovery Setup field. The Create Recovery
Plan dialog box appears.
3. Specify a recovery plan name and description, and click Next.
4. Specify one or more protection groups to include in the plan.
5. Modify or accept the defaults for response times of VMs.
6. Specify the network to use for testing the DR plan.
7. Suspend any local VMs to free up resources for testing recovery plan.
After you complete the recovery plan, you can simulate a failover of the protected resources at the
recovery site in an isolated environment that includes network and storage. To facilitate this test
procedure, you must specify a separate network to use during the test.
Testing the disaster recovery plan
Site Recovery Manager lets you test disaster recovery plans at any time without significantly impacting
production services. Site Recovery Manager performs this task with copy-on-write snapshots of the
mirrored virtual disks at the recovery site. During recovery plan configuration, you can suspend
non-critical VMs on the recovery site to make sure that you have enough resources to run the DR test.
You can test the DR plan by selecting the Test button on the menu bar or by right-clicking on the
recovery plan and selecting TestFailover.
