Overview The battery-backed write cache enabler is included with the Smart Array 5i Plus Controller. Also called the battery module, this component enables write cache, provides transportable data protection, increases overall controller performance, and maintains any cached data for up to 72 hours. The battery module can be added to or removed from the server without using any tools. NOTE: The data protection (and the time limit) also applies if a power outage occurs.

Installation 1. 2. Power down the server, disconnect the power cord, and open the server. Remove the redundant fans. 1 2 2 3. Remove the fan cage retaining bracket. 1 1 2 4. Remove the fan cage.

5. If a Smart Array 5i Controller is present in your system, remove it. 2 1 6. Plug one of the connectors on the cable (from the kit) into the socket on the Smart Array 5i Plus Controller board. 7. Insert the Smart Array 5i Plus Controller into the socket on the system board, pressing firmly to engage both connectors. 1 1 2 8. Plug the other connector on the cable into the socket on the battery module.

9. Remove the protective plastic layer from the Velcro backing on the battery module (1). 10. Stick the battery module to the server chassis behind the DIMM boards and near the middle of the wall (2). 2 1 11. Route the battery module cable along the server wall. 12. Use the Torx-15 service tool (1) to remove the screw (2) that holds the blank panel in place, and then remove the blank panel.

13. Plug the VHDCI cable from the kit into the RAID A socket (1) on the system board. 1 14. Insert the other end of the VHDCI cable into the slot where the blank panel was located. 15. Secure the VHDCI cable connector to the chassis with the two screws included in the kit. 16. Replace the redundant fan cage and fans. Installation is complete.
