Installing the RAID160 SA Controller
Online Addition and Replacement

Online Addition and Replacement
Online Addition and Replacement (OL*) enables the Smart Array Controller to be added online to HP-UX
systems that support OL*; it is not necessary to power off and then reboot the system to add or replace a
Smart Array Controller. System hardware uses per-slot power control and HP-UX OL* utilities to enable
online addition or replacement of Smart Array Controller without adversely affecting other system
components.
IMPORTANT When using OL* to add or replace a RAID160 SA controller, it is important to pay attention to
the warning messages that will be displayed.
It is necessary to remove the SCSI cables from a RAID160 SA controller that is about to be
online replaced, before the PCI slot is powered off.
It is necessary to wait until power has been restored to the PCI slot, before the SCSI cables are
connected to an add-in or replacement RAID160 SA controller.
If the SCSI cables are removed, or connected, to the RAID160 SA controller while the PCI slot
is powered off, the OL* procedure will have to be repeated. See “RAID160 SA Controller OL*
Error Recovery” on page 41.
IMPORTANT In many cases, other controllers (host bus adapters) and slots within the system are dependent
on the target controller. For example, if the target controller has multiple-channels (the
RAID160 SA controller has 4 channels), suspending or deleting drivers for the target PCI slot
also suspends individual drivers for the multiple hardware paths on the controller installed in
that PCI slot.
For detailed instructions and information on using the OL* feature, see the latest edition of the Interface
Card OL* Support Guide. To determine whether your server supports OL*, see the HP Smart Array
Controller Support Matrix. These documents can be viewed or downloaded at:
