HP Smart Array 6400 Series Controllers Support Guide, September 2007

Downloading Software for the Smart Array 6400 Series Controllers
The drivers, utilities and manpages for the Smart Array 6400 series controllers are located at the
HP Software Depot.
Go to http://www.software.hp.com
Search for “Smart Array 6402” or “Smart Array 6404”.
Click Receive for Free.
Select the HP-UX version that your system runs, then complete the required registration
information and click Next.
Click the depot that corresponds with the OS you are running to download the drivers,
utilities, and manpages for the Smart Array Controllers.
In the Documents column next to the Download Software column, click Installation
Instructions to download instructions for using the Software Distributor tool to install the
drivers, utilities, and manpages.
Installing Software for Smart Array 6400 Series Controllers
The drivers, utilities, and manpages for the Smart Array 6400 Series Controllers are contained
in the RAID-01 bundle located in the downloaded depot; see “Downloading Software for the
Smart Array 6400 Series Controllers” (page 25). They can be installed using Software Distributor
(SD).
SD is a tool for installing software on HP-UX host systems. SD can also be used to remove software
from HP-UX systems.
The RAID-01 bundle is composed of several files that will be copied to the appropriate directories
on the host system. View these files in the /opt/raidsa/bin directory.
The instructions for using SD to install or remove the drivers, utilities, and manpages for the
Smart Array 6400 series controllers can be viewed at the HP Software Depot. See “Downloading
Software for the Smart Array 6400 Series Controllers” (page 25).
IMPORTANT: For HP-UX 11i v3, the ciss driver (version B.11.31.0709.01 or later) can be
dynamically loaded into, or unloaded from, the HP-UX kernel without rebuilding the kernel or
rebooting the system. This feature has certain system patch dependencies; for more information,
see the RAID-01 (ciss) Mass Storage Driver Release Notes at:

Preparing for the Smart Array 6400 Series Controller Installation
Before installing a Smart Array 6400 Series Controller in a server, back up all data. This step is
mandatory if the disks were not previously configured on a Smart Array Controller, because the
existing data format will not be recognized by the controller and the data will not be preserved.
Also, if you are connecting non-arrayed SCSI disk drives to a Smart Array Controller, you must
back up all data, because data is not preserved when RAID controllers are connected to
non-arrayed disk drives.
NOTE: If your server supports Online Addition, Replacement and Deletion (OL* for 11i v3) or
Online Addition and Replacement (OL* for 11i v2 or OLAR for 11iv1) and you plan to do an
online installation, see “Online Addition and Replacement” (page 27). See the HP Smart Array
Controller Support Matrix located in the HP RAID category of the Networking and Communications
section at http://www.docs.hp.com, to determine whether your server supports OL* or
OLAR.
To prepare a server for offline installation of the Smart Array 6400 Series Controller, follow these
