HP Smart Array 6400 Series Controllers Support Guide, September 2007

Setting up a Smart Array 6400 Series Controller as a Boot Device
This section describes the additional steps that you will need to follow to enable your system to
boot from a Smart Array 6400 Series Controller.
NOTE: On HP Integrity systems, use the Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA) to
create the logical drives. On HP/9000 systems, use Ignite/UX-saconfig to create the logical drives.
Planning to Install HP-UX on a Logical Drive
On each Smart Array Controller, you can set up any number of its logical drives as boot devices.
For example, if you have two controllers in a system, and each controller has three logical drives
configured on it, you can set up two logical drives on one controller as boot devices, and all three
logical drives on the other controller as boot devices, giving you a total of five boot devices.
Before you set up a Smart Array Controller as a boot device, consider the following:
When you use a Smart Array logical drive as a boot device running HP-UX, you are limited
in the configuration tasks you can perform with the saconfig configuration utility. The
saconfig utility sees the logical drive as being in use, so configuration changes affecting
that drive are not allowed until you are no longer using it as the boot device.
When you are not using a logical drive as a boot device, if you clear the controllers
configuration the logical drive is also deleted. If you still want a logical drive set up as a
boot device, you must configure a logical drive and then complete the entire boot setup
process again.
If you have trouble accessing RAID boot data, only limited troubleshooting tools are available.
HP recommends booting from an alternative boot media and using STM and sautil online
tools. For more information, see Chapter 4: “Troubleshooting” (page 55).
The following dependencies must be met before a Smart Array Controller can be set up as a boot
device:
You must have the correct version of the product dependent code (PDC) installed. For
information on the PDC versions needed for each of the supported HP-UX systems, see the
HP Smart Array Controller Release Notes. If you do not have the correct PDC version, contact
your HP representative.
You must have Smart Array Controller firmware version 1.92 or later installed. For
information, see “Smart Array 6400 Series Controller Firmware” (page 33).
HP strongly recommends having an alternate boot device available.
Configuring for HP-UX 11i v2 or 11i v3 Using ORCA Offline
The Smart Array Controllers support Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA) on HP
Integrity servers. When a server is powered on, the Power-On Self Test (POST) runs, and any
array controllers in the system are initialized. If the array controller supports ORCA, POST
temporarily halts, and an ORCA prompt message is displayed for approximately five seconds.
If ORCA is not supported, the prompt message is not displayed, and the system continues with
the startup sequence.
While the ORCA prompt is displayed, press the F8 key to start ORCA. The ORCA main menu
is displayed, enabling you to create, view, or delete a logical drive.
