2 OpenVMS installation
This chapter describes the installation process for the HP Smart Array P700m Controller on
OpenVMS servers.
Installation overview
To install your Smart Array Series Controller, follow these steps:
1. Plan your disk configurations. For more information, see the RAID Technology Overview.
2. Check the installation prerequisites. See “Installation prerequisites” (page 15)
3. Check for the latest driver software. See “Checking for the latest driver software” (page 15)
and “Installing software” (page 16).
4. Install the controller hardware. See “Hardware installation” (page 21)
5. Install an HP 3Gb SAS BL Switch Module in the blade enclosure.
NOTE: For more information on the association between the mezzanine bay and the
interconnect bays, see the HP BladeSystem Enclosure Setup and Installation Guide and the HP
3Gb SAS BL Switch User Guide. Where you install the mezzanine card will determine where
you need to install the interconnect module.
6. Connect the SAS BL Switch module to a drive enclosure.
7. Verify the controller firmware version and upgrade the controller firmware if necessary.

8. Verify the installation. See “Verifying the controller installation” (page 19).
9. Configure the controller for boot support, if necessary. See “Configuring a Smart Array
Series Controller as a boot device ” (page 19).
Installation prerequisites
Before installing the Smart Array Series Controller, be sure the following hardware and software
prerequisites have been met:
1. Confirm that your server and OpenVMS operating system version are supported by the
Controller.
For information about the supported server models and OpenVMS versions, see the HP
Smart Array RAID Controllers Support Matrix.
2. Read the driver release notes for your OpenVMS version to check for any known problems,
required patches, or other information you need for installation.
3. Ensure that your system has the latest patch kit for FIBRE_SCSI.
NOTE: The P700m requires the FIBRE_SCSI-V0400 TIMA patch kit (or later). For information
on how to obtain the latest patch kit, see “Checking for the latest driver software” (page 15).
Checking for the latest driver software
The drivers and utilities for the Smart Array series controllers are located at the IT Resource
Center website. To search for updated drivers and patches, follow these steps:
