HP StorageWorks 1000/1500 Modular Smart Array application note: Migrating to active/active controllers in Linux environments (400681-002, October 2006)

Migrating to active/active controllers in Linux environments 7

Upgrade the firmware on the MSA controller(s).
Use the following items to perform the upgrade: (See Preparing for the migration.)

Power cycle the MSA and all attached storage enclosures. Use the following sequence:
IMPORTANT: Do not deviate from this power-cycle sequence. If the MSA and the
storage enclosures are power-cycled out of order, LUNs will be marked as failed and
must be re-enabled manually.
a. Press and hold down the MSA Power/Standby button for approximately five
seconds to place the MSA in Standby mode.
b. Power off all storage enclosures attached to the MSA.
c. Wait approximately two minutes to ensure that the hard disk drives stop
rotating.
d. Restart all storage enclosures attached to the MSA.
e. Wait approximately four minutes to allow the enclosures to complete their
power-on routine.
f. Press and release the MSA Power/Standby button to restart the MSA.
g. Wait until the
MSA STARTUP COMPLETE message is displayed on the controller
LCD panel.
h. In dual-controller configurations only, firmware on the two controllers is
compared. When the firmware versions are mismatched, the system displays
the following prompt to clone the firmware on the controller with the latest
version over to the controller with the earlier version firmware:
07 CLONE FIRMWARE? ‘<‘ = NO, ‘>’ = YES
Press the > button on the LCD panel to clone the firmware and then wait for the
cloning process to complete, the controller to automatically restart, and for
MSA
STARTUP COMPLETE
to display on the controller LCD panel.

For systems moving from single-path to dual-path:
Hot-install and connect the additional/redundant components.
(See step 2 in Preparing for the migration for a list of these components.)
NOTE: Note the following when installing components in the MSA:
Before installing the additional MSA controller, ensure that both controllers have
the same size cache module.
When installing the additional MSA controller and Fibre Channel I/O module,
use the instructions shipped with the components.
After installing the additional MSA array controller and Fibre Channel I/O
module, allow the cloning process to clone the firmware from the
already-updated controller to the just-installed controller. Wait for the controller
to automatically restart and
MSA STARTUP COMPLETE to display on the
controller LCD panel.
