1 Introducing the B-Series MP Router blade This chapter provides the following information: • Overview, page 11 • Managing the B-Series MP Router blade, page 14 • Supported Features, page 15 Overview The B-Series MP Router blade integrates 16 physical Fibre Channel SFP ports supporting the Fibre Channel Routing Services, and 2 physical Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) SFP ports supporting the Fibre Channel Over IP (FCIP) feature. It operates with Fabric OS 5.1.
Initial start-up summary The B-Series MP Router blade behavior is to power up in an offline (disabled) state until the ports are configured and enabled. After the POST is complete, the firmware version on the B-Series MP Router blade autolevels with the firmware version on the active CP. You must run Fabric OS 5.1.x or higher or the B-Series MP Router blade will be faulted.
Figure 1 identifies B-Series MP Router blade components.
Managing the B-Series MP Router blade Use the management functions built into the 4/256 SAN Director director to manage the B-Series MP Router blade port status, blade status, and other information to help you analyze performance and to accelerate system debugging. NOTE: The B-Series MP Router blade automatically performs Power-on self-test (POST) each time it is powered on. Errors are recorded in the error log. You can manage the B-Series MP Router blade using the management options listed in Table 3.
Supported Features The B-Series MP Router blade supports the following features built into the firmware: • Fibre Channel Routing Services • Extended Fabrics The following optional software is available with the purchase of a specific license key: FC over IP SAN Extension (FCIP) For information on these features, see the HP StorageWorks Fabric OS 5.1.x administrator guide.

Optional items Purchase the following items separately. • 16 Small-form-Factor Pluggable SFP transceivers • 2 SFP transceivers for the GbE ports Installing and configuring the B-Series MP Router blade To configure the B-Series MP Router blade, complete the following tasks: 1. ”Verify 4/256 SAN Director prerequisites” on page 18 2. ”Insert the B-Series MP Router blade into the 4/256 SAN Director” on page 18 3. ”Configure FCIP and Fibre Channel Routing Services and enable the ports” on page 19 4.
Configure FCIP and Fibre Channel Routing Services and enable the ports The ports on the B-Series MP Router blade are initially set to persistently disabled. If you want to enable the FC ports as a standard E_Port or F_port use the portcfgpersistentenable command to enable the ports. If you are using the FC ports as EX_Ports you must configure the Fibre Channel Routing Services feature prior to enabling the ports. The GbE ports can only be used once you have configured FCIP and enabled the VE_Ports.
Once the B-Series MP Router blade is installed and fully configured in a 4/256 SAN Director, the switchShow command displays 32 Fibre Channel ports (port numbers 0 through 31) and 2 GbE ports as in the following Example: sw48000:admin> switchshow switchName: sw48000 switchType: 42.

Table 4 shows the B-Series MP Router blade LEDs. Table 4 describes the LEDs and their actions. Interpreting POST results POST is a system check that is performed each time the B-Series MP Router blade is powered on, rebooted, or reset, and during which the LEDs flash different colors. To determine whether POST completed successfully and whether any errors were detected: • Verify that the LEDs on the switch indicate that all components are healthy (LED patterns are described in Table 4 on page 24).
Powering the B-Series MP Router blade on and off The B-Series MP Router blade must be installed to an operational 4/256 SAN Director in order to be powered on. To power the B-Series MP Router blade on, set the slider switch at the top of the blade to On (see Figure 1). Power is supplied to the blade as soon as installed to an operational 4/256 SAN Director and powered on.

Memory specifications The B-Series MP Router blade uses three types of memory devices: • Boot flash - 4 MB • Compact flash - 512 MB • Main memory (SDRAM) - 512 MB Fibre Channel port specifications The Fibre Channel ports in the B-Series MP Router blade are compatible with SWL, LWL, and ELWL SFP transceivers. The strength of the signal is determined by the type of transceiver in use. The ports meet all required safety standards. For more information about these standards.
Boot In addition to POST, boot includes the following tasks after POST is complete: 1. Perform universal port configuration 2. Initialize links 3. Analyze fabric. If any ports are connected to other switches, the switch participates in a fabric configuration 4. Obtain a domain ID and assigning port addresses Regulatory Certifications Table 8 lists the safety and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) specifications for which the B-Series MP Router blade is certified.

Glossary This glossary defines terms used in this guide or related to this product and is not a comprehensive glossary of computer terms. AL_PA Arbitrated loop physical address. A unique 8-bit value assigned during loop initialization to a port in an arbitrated loop. alias server A fabric software facility that supports multicast group management. API Application programming interface. A defined protocol that allows applications to interface with a set of services.
DLS Dynamic load sharing. Dynamic distribution of traffic over available paths. Allows for recomputing of routes when an Fx_Port or E_Port changes status. Domain ID Unique identifier for all switches in a fabric, used in routing frames. Usually automatically assigned by the principal switch, but can be assigned manually. The Domain ID for an HP switch can be any integer between 1 and 239. Generally, the default Domain ID is 1. E_D_TOV Error detect time-out value.
FL_Port Fabric loop port. A port that is able to transmit under fabric protocol and also has arbitrated loop capabilities. Can be used to connect an NL_Port to a switch. FRU Field-Replaceable Unit. A component that can be replaced on site. FS Fibre Channel Service. A service that is defined by Fibre Channel standards and exists at a well-known address. For example, the Simple Name Server is a Fibre Channel service. FSP Fibre Channel service protocol.
LIP Loop initialization primitive. The signal used to begin initialization in a loop. Indicates either loop failure or resetting of a node. LM_TOV Loop master time-out value. The minimum time that the loop master waits for a loop initialization sequence to return. loop failure Loss of signal within a loop for any period of time, or loss of synchronization for longer than the time-out value. loop initialization The logical procedure used by an L_Port to discover its environment.
PLOGI Port login. The port-to-port login process by which initiators establish sessions with targets. point-to-point A Fibre Channel topology that employs direct links between each pair of communicating entities. port cage The metal casing extending out of the Fibre Channel port on the switch, and into which a GBIC or SFP transceiver can be inserted. Port_Name The unique identifier assigned to a Fibre Channel port. Communicated during login and port discovery. POST Power On Self-Test.
single mode The fiber optic cabling standard that corresponds to distances of up to 10 km between devices. SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol. An internet management protocol that uses either IP for network-level functions and UDP for transport-level functions, or TCP/IP for both. Can be made available over other protocols, such as UDP/IP, because it does not rely on the underlying communication protocols. SNS Simple Name Server.
zone A set of devices and hosts attached to the same fabric and configured as being in the same zone. Devices and hosts within the same zone have access permission to others in the zone, but are not visible to any outside the zone. zone configuration A specified set of zones. Enabling a configuration enables all zones in that configuration.
