Glossary
This glossary denes acronyms and terms used in this guide or related to this product and is not a
comprehensive g lossary of computer terms.
disk array A RA ID. A collection of dis k drives within a c abinet or m ultiple cabinets and
including a controller and software allowing drives to be combined in various
congurations to create virtual drives (LUNs).
FC Fibre Channel, a ber optic interconnection standard commonly used for
storage area networks.
HBA Host bus adapter. The FC interface card that installs in a host to connect the
host to a fabric SAN.

provider
Software that executes on the host, a b us adapter, and the disk array to enable
managing of array LUNs and ports through the Windows OS and applications.
LAN Local Area Network.
LUN Logical Unit Number. A physically addressable storage unit as presented by
a hardware RAID s ubsystem. A virtual disk, consisting of multiple portions of
physical disks addressed as a single unit.

RAID Redundant array of independent disks.
SAN fabric The Fibre Channel hardware and cabling that connects servers to storage
devices in a Storage Area Network (SAN) is referred to as a “fabric. A fabric
switch provides automatically-switched conne ctivity between servers a nd storage
in the fabric.
SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol.
subsystem Synonym fordisk array or RAID.
volume Generic term for a number of physical disks or portions of disks logically
bound together as a virtual disk containing contiguous logical blocks. Volume
can also be software shorthand for a mapped volume (Windows drive letter
or mount point).
VDS Microsoft Virtual Disk Service, the Windows service that manages storage
through hardware providers.
