Preface
1 Quick start for the HP MSA VDS hardware provider This chapter summarizes installation for those who want to get a quick start without reading the details contained in later chapters. If you need additional details, see "Preconfiguration" on page 17 and "Installation" on page 21. IMPORTANT: A successful installation depends on using compatible versions of the OS and all installed software. See the hardware provider release notes for version requirements.
Quick start for the HP MSA VDS hardware provider
2 Overview of the HP MSA VDS hardware provider The HP MSA VDS hardware provider is software that installs on a Windows 2003 server connected to an HP MSA disk array. The hardware provider works with the Microsoft Virtual Disk Service (VDS) to expand the capability of the Windows operating system and Windows applications to manage the HP disk array LUNs and ports.
Windows Disk Management Windows Disk Management consists of the Windows software and user interfaces that enable you to manage disks, volumes, and file systems. The user interface for disk management is included in the Computer Management application within the Administrative Tools Control Panel. Windows management applications Windows applications operate through the Microsoft VDS service and the HP hardware provider to use and manage array disks and volumes.
HP MSA VDS hardware provider The HP MSA VDS hardware provider consists of special HP DLLs and executables that install on the Windows server. These components extend the capability of Windows and Windows applications to communicate with and manage the disk array. The advantage of VDS and the HP MSA VDS hardware provider is that they enable you to manage multiple array models from a single interface.

3 Preconfiguring for the HP MSA VDS hardware provider This chapter lists hardware and software components that support the HP MSA VDS hardware provider and explains how to preconfigure the disk array and Windows 2003 servers for use with the hardware provider. You must complete the procedures in this chapter before you install and configure the HP hardware provider. For HP MSA VDS hardware provider documentation and software downloads, see the following web location: http://www.hp.

When using the VDS framework to create and manage LUNs, make LUNs close to the same size as the physical disk size. You can make LUNs smaller than a physical disk (or disks, if spanning multiple disks), but any space left over on the physical disk(s) cannot be used. For example, if you have three 36 GB drives totalling 108 GB and you create a LUN of 20 GB spanning all three disks, the remaining 88 GB are unusable.
the HP Array Configuration Utility user guide. Install the MPIO software, if used. Ensure the array is connected through a Fibre Channel switch to the hardware provider server as explained previously. NOTE: When using the VDS framework to create and manage LUNs, make LUNs close to the same size as the physical disk size. You can make LUNs smaller than a physical disk (or disks, if spanning multiple disks), but any space left over on the physical disk(s) cannot be used.
4 Installing the HP MSA VDS hardware provider This chapter explains how to install the HP MSA VDS hardware provider. IMPORTANT: A successful installation depends on using compatible versions of the OS and software. See the hardware provider release notes for version requirements. For HP hardware providers documentation and software downloads, see the following web location: http://www.hp.
If hardware provider version 4.00.01 or earlier is still installed, you will receive a warning message, and you must remove the old hardware provider manually. Click OK to exit the installation. Close all applications that use the MSA VDS hardware provider, and issue a net stop vds command at the command line. Remove the previous MSA VDS hardware provider version using the Windows Add or Remove Programs control panel. Then restart the installation. (Hardware provider versions 4.01.
1. In Windows, click Start, click Control Panel, and double-click Add or Remove Programs. 2. Select the HP MSA VDS hardware provider program for removal. 3. Click Change/Remove. Windows removes the program.

5 Troubleshooting the HP MSA VDS hardware provider This chapter explains how to troubleshoot the HP MSA VDS hardware provider and includes lists of error messages and explanations. Troubleshooting procedures The following instructions present typical problems and solutions. VDS will not install The HP MSA VDS hardware provider installation works only on the Windows versions listed in the HP MSA VDS hardware provider release notes. The installer will not install the software on other versions of Windows.
6. Make sure you logged into all devices and software using administrator privileges. 7. Check the Windows application event log. 8. Visit the Microsoft website support knowledge base and search for “VDS logging.” Turn on logging as instructed by Microsoft. Use the Microsoft procedure for testing VDS and checking the log.
