Storage Management and Virtual Replicator on a SAN
This section provides an overview of the components that make up the NAS storage
structure. A complete reading of the components and their relationships may be
found in the administration guide.
CAUTION: This section on storage management and VR on a SAN is required
reading material for the NAS/SAN Administrator. This section develops the concepts
and requirements that serve as the basis for successfully using a StorageWorks NAS
device on the SAN. Failure to read this section and the appropriate sections on
storage management in the administration guide may lead to data loss or file
corruption..
Storage Management Overview
Figure 1-5 provides an illustration of the various storage components of the NAS
E7000. Storage is broken up into three major divisions:
SAN storage elements
Virtual Replicator elements
File system elements
Each of these elements are composed of the previous levels elements.
SAN Storage Elements
The lowest level of storage management on the NAS E7000 occurs at the physical
drive level. Physical drives are placed into the external storage enclosure or
enclosures of the SAN storage network and are grouped into RAIDsets (LUNs) for
fault tolerance and better performance.
