Configuring Your RAID Array 3000 for
Dual-Controller Operation
NOTE: To configure the system for dual-controller operation, you should have a PC with
two serial ports. If your PC has only one serial port, Refer to Chapter 4 of the
“ RAID Array
3000 Controller Shelf Hardware User’s Guide
” Second Controller Option for the procedure
describing how to configure dual controllers from a single serial port.
In dual-controller operation each controller must be configured for either
Active/Active mode or Active/Passive mode.
■ In the Active/Active mode the top controller sees one host port as active,
while the bottom controller sees the other host port as active. The
controllers see their non-active host ports as passive. If one of the
controllers fails, the surviving controller sees both host ports as active.
In this way the surviving controller ensures that both host busses remain
operational. The Active/Active mode can be useful for balancing I/O
activity between controllers.
■ In the Active/Passive mode the primary controller sees both host ports
as active. The remaining controller sees both host ports as passive. If the
primary controller fails, the remaining controller takes over and sees
both host ports as active.
The Active/Active mode is the preferred mode. Do the following steps to
configure the Active/Active mode:
1. Make sure the RAID Array 3000 is turned off.
2. Install the second controller in the bottom slot. Refer to the
documentation packaged with the controller.
3. Connect the serial cable to the CTR BOTTOM connector on the back of
the RAID Array 3000 and connect the other end of the cable to one of
the PC’s available COM ports. (The top controller is usually connected
to COM1 and the bottom controller to COM2).
4. Make sure that both serial cables are connected. Serial cables must be
connected between the COM ports on the PC and CTR BOTTOM and
CTR TOP connector on the back of the RAID Array 3000.
5. Power on the system.
6. Select Command Console version 2.2 from the Start Menu, then select
HSZ22 StorageWindow.
