1 Introduction This chapter introduces you to the audit logs created by XP Remote Web Console. It describes the purpose of the logs, how to download them, and descriptions of the audit logs. Introduction to audit log The practice of logging and log management using syslog has been used for many years, but using storage technology as part of the process is relatively new. The audit log function allows you to record the access, activity, and configuration changes made to your storage system.
• In the United States, the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act establishes corporate accountability for all public companies, requiring strict IT controls and processes. Specifically, Sarbanes-Oxley requires companies to “Audit unauthorized access, misuse and fraud, in order to ensure the accuracy of corporate financial and business information” and “maintain financial records for seven years.
itself with plugging into this infrastructure and then transmitting the log events. In addition to the syslog server, audit log also allows you to maintain a duplicate copy of the log inside the hard disk of the SVP as a backup. In the storage system, a log message is output to the audit log in two types of cases: • A configuration change that is made either from an XP Remote Web Console computer or the SVP. • Powering up and shutting down the storage system.
NOTE: Only the storage administrator can download the audit log file, and the Audit Log Administrator role needs to be set to Modify or View. 1. Log on as a storage administrator and open the XP Remote Web Console's main pane. 2. Click the Audit button in the top right corner of the main pane: Figure 3 Audit button 3. • Audit:Normal displays when the number of saved lines in the audit log file is below the threshold.
Figure 4 Syslog tab The Syslog tab has the following features: • Output to Primary Server allows you to specify whether to transfer the audit log to the syslog server. • Click Enable to transfer the audit log to the primary syslog server. • Click Disable if you do not want to transfer the audit log to the primary syslog server.
• Output Detailed Information allows you to specify whether to transfer the detailed information as well as the audit log file. NOTE: This information is always maintained on the array, regardless of the settings made in this pane. • Click Enable to transfer the detailed information to the syslog server. • Click Disable to not transfer the detailed information to the syslog server. • Download Syslog allows you to download the syslog information file component to the XP Remote Web Console computer.
4. Click the Audit Log tab to open the Audit Log pane. Figure 5 Audit Log tab 5. 6. Set the primary FTP server according to the following procedure: a. Click Enable in Output to Primary Server. b. Enter the IP address in the Primary Server Setting. You do not have to enter the periods. c. Enter the User ID and Password you use to login the primary FTP server. d. Enter the folder to which the audit log information file will be output.
2. Click the Audit Log tab to open the Audit Log pane. 3. Click Transfer in the Audit Log pane. A message will display to indicate that the transfer has completed. NOTE: If you change the configuration in the Audit Log pane (when the items set in the pane are displayed in blue italic letters), click Apply to apply the configuration in the pane to the storage system, and then click Transfer.
Description of the audit log file The audit log file includes the following components: Table 1 Audit log file components Component Login audit log file Settings audit log file Syslog information file File name login.log audit.log syslog.log AuditYYYYMMDD.tgz AuditYYYYMMDD.tgz syslogYYYYMMDD.tgz YYYY = year YYYY = year YYYY = year MM = month MM = month MM = month DD = day DD = day DD = day AuditSSSSSYYYYMMDDHHMMSS.tgz AuditSSSSSYYYYMMDDHHMMSS.
Component Threshold Login audit log file Settings audit log file Once the information stored in the audit log information file reaches its maximum capacity, the starting line of the oldest data begins to be overwritten with the starting line of the newest data (wrap around). When you reach 70% of this threshold, the yellow Audit:Warning button displays on the XP Remote Web Console main pane.
2 Audit log file format This chapter describes the three types of audit log file components. Login audit log file component The login audit log file component includes user ID, SLPR number, date, time, function, operation (login or logout), IP address, result, and serial number. Each item is separated by a comma (see Table 3 for a description of each item). The following figure shows an example.
Figure 7 Settings audit log file component The audit log file includes the following items, listed in the following table: Table 3 Items in the audit log file Number Item Explanation User ID NOTE: 1 Login user ID When the operation name is AuditLog and the event name is Create File, system is output. SLPR number. For storage administrators, 99 displays. NOTE: 2 SLPR number Not output when the operation name is AuditLog and the event name is Create File.
Number Item Explanation Login audit log file components display the IP address of the XP Remote Web Console (web client) computer used for logging on. No information is output for the logoff operation. 8 Parameters Settings audit log file components display parameters for certain functions, such as Modify for the ChangeMode operation. For some operations, such as Paircreate, parameters display as detailed information on the following line or lines.
Syslog information file component The syslog information file component includes information from the login audit log file and settings audit log file components, including detailed information from the settings file. The following figure shows an example. Figure 8 Syslog audit log file The syslog files include the following items, listed in the following table. Table 5 Items in the syslog file No.

Syslog information file monitoring threshold Only the function and event names are output to the syslog file and are described in the following table. Event names are output only once. NOTE: The information described in the following table is not output to the setting information file.
