Abstract

This document describes how to remove and replace an

Ethernet Expansion Blade (EEB) in an ESL G3 Tape Library.

CAUTION: Parts can be damaged by

electrostatic discharge. Keep parts in their

containers until needed. Make sure that you are

properly grounded when touching static sensitive

components.

NOTE: The EEB is hot-swappable. You do not

have to turn off the power to the library or

module to remove and replace an EEB.

NOTE: The EEB is sold as part of the HP ESL

G3 Drive Readiness Kit. Up to two EEBs are

housed in the I/O management unit for all

library modules, either the control module or an

expansion module, that contain drives.

IMPORTANT:

• For libraries shipped before May 2013

and running a library firmware version

prior to 663H: Drives must be installed in

bottom to top order in the control module,

filling the module with 12 drives, before

any drives are added to the first expansion

module. Additionally, the first expansion

module must have all 12 drives installed

from bottom to top before adding any

drives to the next expansion module.

• For libraries shipped after May 2013 and

running library firmware version 663H or

later: Drives can be installed throughout the

library and across expansion modules

consecutively or non-consecutively, as long

as the control module contains at least one

drive. However, drives should still be

added to the control module and to any

additional expansion modules in bottom to

top order.

Inspect the contents of the kit

The kit contains one EEB.

You will also need the ESD strap that shipped with the

ESL G3.

An EEB in slot 7 supports up to six drives in the lower drive bay. An EEB in slot 8 supports up to six drives in the upper drive bay. Drives must be populated in the module from bottom to top, consecutively. The EEBs and their ports are connected to the corresponding drives from bottom to top, also. For example, connect drive 1 (the bottom-most drive) to port ETH 1 of the EEB in slot 7, and drive 2 (directly above drive 1) to port ETH 2 of the EEB in slot 7.

. Remove the EEB blank plate (new installation only) 1. Lift the latch hooks of the blank plate out of the locked position and push them up and away from the center of the blank plate. 4. Apply pressure evenly to both sides of the EEB and slide it into the I/O management unit until the latch hooks begin to move towards the middle of the EEB. Push the latch hooks towards the middle of the EEB and into the lock position.

NOTE: After you replace the EEB, the CMB ensures that the EEB is loaded with the proper firmware. This firmware is based on the currently installed level of library firmware on the MCB. If the autoleveling process fails, the EEB becomes inoperable and the library creates an event to report the issue.
