Configuration Methods

The bridge can be configured over the serial port via a terminal, terminal

emulation utility or over Ethernet via a Telnet utility, or Internet Web browser.

FTP and TFTP are also supported on Ethernet to upgrade firmware revisions.

Serial

The serial port allows for configuration of device characteristics from an

attached terminal or terminal emulator. For instructions on use of the serial

interface, see Serial Port Connection on page 64.

Note A serial connection cannot be made if a Telnet session is already

open. If a user attempts to open a serial connection while a

Telnet session is already open, the message “System in use via

Telnet, Shell restarted” appears over the serial interface. The

serial interface will resume working when the Telnet session

closes.

Ethernet

The 10/100 BaseT Ethernet port must first be configured via the serial port

with an appropriate IP address, subnet mask, and gateway prior to use, unless

the default values are to be used. The factory default values that are used by

the bridge are IP address 1.1.1.1, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a

gateway address of 0.0.0.0.

Telnet

The bridge is capable of holding Telnet sessions for configuration purposes.

The configuration menus accessed via the serial port will be disabled when a

Telnet session is connected. To open a Telnet session, the IP address of the

bridge and a Telnet client utility are required. The Telnet command may be

used from any open window on a HP-UX system or from the command

prompt on most Windows NT systems. Start a Telnet session using the

following steps:

1. On HP-UX, open a

terminal window. On Windows NT, open a

command prompt window.
