Fibre Channel Connection

Note Failure to correctly configure a Fibre Channel (FC) device may

impair the operation of the storage area network (SAN) to which

it is attached. Before connecting the bridge to other Fibre

Channel devices, it is important to understand the configuration

requirements of the environment to which it will be connected.

Typical installations will have the bridge connected to either a host Fibre

Channel HBA, arbitrated loop, or switched fabric environment. The bridge can

be directly attached to the FC host bus adapter (HBA) in a point-to-point

fashion. Arbitrated loop requires the use of FC hubs, to which the bridge can

be attached. This enables a single host Fibre Channel HBA to access multiple

FC target devices. In FC switched environments, the bridge is directly attached

to the switch. This enables multiple host FC HBAs to share one or more FC

target devices.

Both FC switches and hubs may allow for individual ports to be configured for

different media types. The bridge must be connected to the hub or switch port

with the appropriate FC cabling for the media type in use on both the bridge

and the port to which it is connected.

The bridge supports various Fibre Channel media types through the use of an

external Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC).

The supported media type is multi-mode fiber support - 1.0625 Gbit dual SC

connectors.

SCSI Connection

The bridge supports Fast/Ultra-2 Narrow/Wide SCSI. Four 68-pin D-shell

connectors are located on the back panel of the bridge, allowing the bridge to

be attached at the end of up to four SCSI buses (FC 4/1 HV). The internal

terminator of the FC 4/1 HV will terminate each of its SCSI buses. The FC 4/1

HV should always be installed at the end of the SCSI bus.

Usually, the FC 2/1 LV will be installed at the end of the SCSI bus. In these

cases, only one of the SCSI connectors per SCSI bus will be used. By default,

the FC 2/1 LV will terminate each of its SCSI buses.

Should the FC 2/1 LV be used in the middle of a SCSI bus, be sure to disable

its internal termination and check that each end of the cable is separately

terminated.
