Simple Network Management Protocol
A protocol that spec ifies a mechanism for network management that is complete, yet
simple. Information is exchanged between agents, which are the devices on the
network being managed, and managers, whic h are the devices o n the network thro ugh
which the management is done.
SNMP
See Simple Network Management Protocol.
SNMP community
Also known as SNMP community string. SNMP community is a cluster of managed
produc ts ( in SNMP terminolo gy, ho sts) to which the server or managed product running
the SNMP agent belo ngs.
SNMP community name
The name assigned to a given SNMP community. Queries from an SNMP management
station to a device running an SNMP agent will only elicit a response if those queries are
addressed with the correct SNMP community name.
storage area network
A high-performance data communications enviro nment that interc onnects co mputing
and storage resources so that the resources can be effectively shared and consolidated.
subnet mask
Used by a c omputer to determine whether ano ther c o mputer with which it needs to
co mmunic ate is located on a loc al o r remote network. The netwo rk mask depends upo n
the class of networks to which the computer is connecting. The mask indicates which
digits to loo k at in a lo nger network address and allows the router to avoid handling the
entire address.
switch priority
Value c onfigured into each switch in a fabric that determines its relative likelihood of
becoming the fabrics principal switch.
