Check your ATAPI/IDE Settings
Microsoft Windows
A. Turn on the computer, and insert the HP SureStore CD. The installation
program may start automatically. If it does not:
Select Start > Run.
Type D:\SETUP (where D is your CD-ROM drive), and click OK.
B. Select the desired language, then click Next.
C. Select View ATAPI/IDE Settings. The program evaluates your system and
makes tape drive installation recommendations.
Linux
Refer to your computer owner’s manual for the ATAPI/IDE settings your
computer is currently using.
D. Mark the recommendations here. You will use them later to install the
tape drive. When you are done, click Next to continue.
A. Shut down your operating system and turn off your computer.
B. Unplug the power cables.
C. Remove the cover from your computer.
Refer to your Additional IDE card required?” answer from Step 2.
If you need to install an IDE card, do it now and repeat Step 2.
Open your computer
A. Remove the drive bay cover plate from the front of your computer (refer
to your computer owner's manual).
B. If your computer requires mounting rails, attach them to the sides of the
tape drive. Look at the rails on your CD-ROM drive as an example.
C. Insert the tape drive in the bay. Do not dislodge any cables inside your
computer.
Set the jumper
Install the Drive
Master
Slave
B.
C.
A. Look at the back of your tape drive with the green side up.
B. Move the jumper, if needed. The default setting is Slave.
Master Put the jumper over the right pins.
Slave Put the jumper over the center pins.
CS Put the jumper over the left pins.*
* Note: If the data cable you are using has a hole punched out or the end
connectors are labeled Master or Slave, you must jumper the drive as CS
(Cable Select) rather than Master or Slave.
Moving the jumper
Carefully pull off the jumper with your fingers, then slide it over the
appropriate pins.
Refer to your “Which jumper setting?” answer from Step 2.
One Device
A. Use the data cable that came with the tape drive.
B. Locate the end connector that is closest to the middle connector.
C. Holding the red stripe to your right, attach the end connector to the tape
drive (see picture).
D. Go to Step 7.
Two Devices
A. Find your CD-ROM or DVD drive inside your computer.
B. Locate the data cable that connects your CD-ROM or DVD to the
motherboard.
If the data cable has 3 connectors and one of them is open, you will use
this cable instead of the one that came with your tape drive.
If the data cable has only 2 connectors (one on each end), replace it with
the data cable that came with your tape drive, so that you will have one
additional connector available.
C. Attach the open connector to your tape drive. Make sure all connectors on
the data cable are securely attached.
D. Go to Step 8.
Connect the data cable to the tape drive
Note: If you installed an IDE card, attach the cable that came with the card to the tape drive. Then go to Step 8.
Refer to your “Which data cable instructions?” answer from Step 2. Then follow either the one device or two
device instructions below.
A. Find your IDE controller (it is a 40 pin connector). Primary or
secondary controllers can usually be found on the motherboard, your
computer's main printed circuit board. The motherboard contains CPU
chips and sockets for additional boards, and it probably has cables
connected to it. Tertiary or quaternary controllers are often located
on sound boards, expansion cards, or an IDE card.
B. Once you have located the IDE controller on your motherboard or card, find Pin 1.
C. Connect the data cable to the IDE connector so that the red stripe aligns with Pin 1.
Having trouble? See the “Troubleshooting" section.
Tip: Finding Pin 1
If one connector is in use, use the same cable orientation as that connector's cable.
If both connectors are open, see if the connector's shape allows you to orient the cable only
one way, or look for tiny labels that identify Pin 1.
Can't find Pin 1? Choose an orientation and attach the cable. Connecting it the wrong way
cannot damage your computer or tape drive! It will prevent your computer from booting
correctly.
Tip: Finding the IDE Controller
Look for the right size connector. Hold the cable end next to open connectors to see if it
will fit over all the pins.
Look for two connectors side-by-side or near each other. They may be behind other
components.
Follow an existing cable:
1. See if your CD-ROM or hard drive uses a cable similar to your new data cable.
2. Follow the cable to the motherboard.
3. Look for an open IDE controller next to the connector in use.
Refer to your “Which IDE controller?” answer from Step 2.
Connect the data cable to the IDE controller
Note: If you followed the two device instructions in Step 6, skip ahead to Step 8.

Troubleshooting
The tape drive was not detected during the installation test.
Shut down and turn off your computer, check and reseat all cabling connections, and rerun the installation program to test the tape drive.
The tape drive was detected but did not pass the installation test.
Shut down and turn off your computer, check and reseat all cabling connections, and rerun the installation program to test the tape drive.
If the test still fails, try running the HP Colorado Backup II software to see if your tape drive is accessible. If it is accessible, it is probably
correctly installed, and you received incorrect test results.
Your computer won't boot up.
Check that the data cable is attached properly and securely to the IDE connector.
Make sure you have not missed any pins on the IDE controller.
Make sure the power cables are attached correctly to each device.
Verify that pin 1 on the data cable is connected to pin 1 on the IDE controller.
Refer to your computer's owner's manual to locate pin 1 on the IDE controller.
Does your computer meet the minimum system requirements?
See “Minimum System Requirements” on the outside of your product box.
You cannot find the IDE controller.
Check your computer's manual, call the computer manufacturer for assistance, or check their web site.
Look for the IDE controller on the motherboard, a daughter board, or a sound board, etc.
The IDE controllers may be labeled. Look on the circuit boards for tiny printing such as:
The cable in your computer is too short or is missing a connector.
Replace the cable in your computer with the cable that came with your new tape drive. Make sure the cable orientation is the same as
the cable that is currently connected to your device.
You may have to twist the cable so that the connector fits properly. This will not damage the cable.
The device sharing the data cable with your tape drive doesn't show up in Explorer/File Manager or doesn't work anymore.
1. Turn off and unplug your computer.
2. Make sure the power cables are securely attached to both devices.
3. If you changed the data cable (middle/end) connector attached to a device that was already inside your computer, set the data cable connector
back to the original position. Now connect the tape drive to the unused connector.
