HP Storage Hardware Providers VDS/VSS Installation Guide (5697-1131, August 2011)

Table Of Contents
The VDS/VSS server is too slow. Use a newer, faster CPU with sufficient memory.
Privileges are not set correctly. Administrator privileges are required in all applications and on all
hardware used with the HP VSS hardware provider.
A writer application is not configured according to best practices. Consult the software manufacturer
for recommended practices. For example, keeping database files small by creating more rather
than larger files may speed up overall operation and database copying. Saving transaction logs
to a different volume than the database may also speed up performance.
There are errors in the snapshot process. Review the Windows application event log, Windows
system event log, and VSS trace to locate errors in the snapshot process. See the Microsoft website
and Windows help for information about the log and trace files.
VSS or VDS operation fails
XP and P9000 only:
VSS or VDS hardware provider operations can fail if provisioning operations are being performed
simultaneously by the user on the array using other management applications such as Remote Web
Console (RWC) resulting in array resources being locked. The VSS hardware provider will generate
a warning event log message (ID 1202) and constantly check for the availability of the resources for
30 minutes. If the resources continue to be unavailable after 30 minutes, hardware providers will
generate an error event log (ID 1401) and fail the operations being performed.
Ensure that no operations are being performed through Remote Web Console (RWC) simultaneously
with VSS or VDS hardware provider operations.
Shadow copy creation fails (event ID 1514)
XP and P9000 only:
The creation of shadow copies may fail if a prior operation of shadow copy deletion failed in Resync
Mode for the same LUN. Deletion failure can result in the shadow copy being in an unusable state.
In this state the shadow copy secondary volume (SVOL) LUN continues to be presented to the host on
which the import operation was earlier performed. For more information see the event Id 1401 in the
Event log messages section.
To restore the shadow copy pair back to a usable state, do the following:
1. For the shadow copy secondary (SVOL) LUN, add a path to the SHADOW host group
For more information on Shadow host groups, see Notes on installing HP P9000 hardware pro-
viders.
2. Remove the path from the host group that was set during the import (present) operation performed
prior to the delete operation.
