HP-UX Remote Access Services Administrator's Guide

1 Remote Access Services Overview
Remote Access Services are used to connect to the remote systems in a network. Remote
access connection from outside the realm of the client and server machines to the
network is usually made via a telephone and modem connection. The efficiency of the
remote connection depends on the network efficiency and the type of service used. An
attempt to improve the remote access servers is continuously made to assist users in
connecting to more resources remotely.
By default, the remote access services function in a non-secure environment. To function
in a secure environment, enable the Kerberos V5 network authentication. In a non-secure
environment, you must have a login name and password to access a remote system,
and the login name is not checked for authentication and authorization. In a secure
environment, you need not have a login name and password. When you attempt to
connect to a remote system, the Kerberos protocol checks if the user is allowed to access
the remote system.
Remote access services allow you to perform different functions, such as file transfer
from a remote system to a local system, remote login, and remote file copy.
The remote access services provided by the HP-UX 11i v2 operating system are as
follows:
R-commands
The telnet program
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

R-Commands
Remote command execution is a process on a host that causes a program to be executed
on another host.
Table 1-1 describes the different r-commands supported in the HP-UX 11i v2 operating
system.
