linking of hardware, software,

by different vendors into a single
communications network.
NIST National Institute of

(formerly NBS). Runs
implementors' workshops that
develop agreements among
vendors on which subsets of
standards will be implemented.
network a combination of
hardware and software that allows
the transfer of data, both locally
and over great distances, between
two or more systems.
