Creating a Back-to-Back Connection
A back-to-back connection is used when a direct link without an ATM
switch is required between systems; for example, when ATM is used as a
high-speed channel between a workstation and an HP server. Figure 5-3
below shows a back-to-back connection.
NOTE Only Classical IP over ATM is supported on back-to-back connections.
Figure 5-3 Back-to-Back Connection
The following restrictions apply to a back-to-back connection:
• Because the connection establishment is not symmetrical, a
back-to-back connection between two ATM adapters must use only
PVCs. A PVC using the same VCI/VPI must be defined on each
system.
• ATM 155 Mbit/s adapters can be configured back-to-back only with
other 155 Mbit/s adapters, and ATM 622 Mbit/s adapters only with
other 622 Mbit/s adapters.
• Two adapters configured back-to-back must have the same type of
interface (MMF, SMF, or UTP Cat 5).
• The ATM network prefix must be configured manually to deactivate
ILMI address registration.
• Both nodes in a back-to-back connection must be configured as ATM
ARP Servers.
