ATM Configuration and Troubleshooting Guide

Troubleshooting Classical IP
Chapter 9 199
The destination IP address should appear on the same line as the PVC
you created (defined with a VPI,VCI). The type of the PVC should be
Dynamic.
Step 2. If the IP address of the destination host is not present, wait aminute and
use atmmgr 0 show -i to display the IP ARP table again. The IP ARP
entity repeats a request for an address until it receives a valid response.
Step 3. If the destination IP address does not appear in the table after a few
minutes, check the switches and the PVC configuration of the
destination node. If these are configured correctly, there might be a
failure in the ARP mechanism (local or at the remote host). If so, contact
HP.
B Create a VC matrix. Draw a matrix of the configuration of all VCs, to
make configuration and troubleshooting easier. See “Creating a VC
Matrix” on page 65 for an example of a VC matrix.
C Use lanscan. Use this command to ensure that the ATM adapter is UP.
If you suspect a problem with the hardware or software installation, see
“Troubleshooting the ATM Adapter and Software Installation” on
page 190.
D Use ping. Use the ping command to test the network connectivity. Be
sure to use the IP address for the ATM interface on the remote machine
instead of the hostname, because part of the problem might be an error
in the /etc/hosts file or connectivity with a name server.
The results from the ping command should look something like this:
PING 15.128.131.156: 10 byte packets
10 bytes from 15.128.131.156: icmp_seq=0.
10 bytes from 15.128.131.156: icmp_seq=1.
10 bytes from 15.128.131.156: icmp_seq=2.
10 bytes from 15.128.131.156: icmp_seq=3.
10 bytes from 15.128.131.156: icmp_seq=4.
----15.128.131.156 PING Statistics----
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss
If the ping to the remote system is successful, it means that a VC has
been opened to the destination. If the PVC is configured correctly, ping
will use the PVC. However, if the PVC was not configured correctly on
