CPE Customer Premises Equipment.
Equipment owned by a customer, which is
used to terminate or process information
from public networks (for example, a T1
multiplexer or a PBX).
D
default route The hop-to-hop route
between routers that packets would take if
no shortcut route exists.
E
Egress The point at which an outbound
data flow exits the MPOA system.
Egress Cache The collection of Egress
Cache Entries in an MPC.
Egress Cache Entry Information that
describes how packets using a specific
outbound data flow are to be encapsulated
and forwarded.
Egress MPC An MPC at the Egress point.
Egress MPS An MPS that serves an Egress
MPC for a specific outbound data flow.
F
fibre optic cable A cable made from a glass
core surrounded by glass or plastic cladding.
The glass of the core “traps” the light that
enters the cable. The light passes through
the cable by reflecting off the core/cladding
boundary. There are two basic types of
fibre-optic cable: multi-mode fibre (MMF)
and single mode fibre (SMF).
floating IP address An MC/ServiceGuard
concept; also called “package IP address”.
The floating IP address is an IP address
associated with an MC/ServiceGuard
package. It can move from one cluster node
to another. A single package can have
several floating IP addresses.
H
High Availability Highly available
systems protect users from software failure,
as well as from failure of a processing unit, a
disk, a LAN component, or an interface card.
I
ILMI The Integrated Local Management
Interface. The standard that specifies the
use of the Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) and an ATM management
information base (MIB) to provide network
status and configuration information.
Ingress The point at which an inbound data
flow enters the MPOA system.
Ingress Cache The collection of Ingress
Cache Entries in an MPC.
Ingress Cache Entry The information for
a specific inbound data flow, which indicates
the shortcut VCC that is to be used and how
the packet is to be encapsulated.
Ingress MPC An MPC at the Ingress point.
Ingress MPS An MPS that serves an
Ingress MPC for a specific inbound data flow.
IP Internet Protocol. A set of conventions or
standards that define the method used to
pass data packets from one network to
another. Each packet contains the addresses
of the sender and the receiver. The
