M
MMF Multi-Mode fibre. A wide-core
fibre-optic cable that allows transmission of
data in the form of many light beams.
Multi-Mode fibre is normally used with an
LED light source.
MPC MPOA Client. A logical component of
MPOA; it implements the client side of the
MPOA protocol. An MPC resides on a LEC
that is an edge device or an MPOA host.
MPC cache The VCC information stored by
an MPC. The MPC reuses the information
for address resolution for shortcut routes.
MPC inbound data flow A data flow that
is entering the MPOA system.
MPC outbound data flow A data flow that
is exiting an MPOA system.
MPOA Multiprotocol Over ATM.
MPOA edge device A physical component
of MPOA; it is an ATM edge device that
contains one or more MPCs.
MPOA host A physical component of
MPOA; it is an ATM host that contains one
or more LECs and one or more MPCs.
MPOA resolution request A request sent
to an MPS by an MPC, asking for the ATM
address of a packet’s destination. The
address is then used to establish a shortcut
route.
MPOA router. A physical component of
MPOA; it is an ATM router that contains
MPOA logical components.
MPOA system The partof an ATM network
that is MPOA capable.
MPS MPOA Server. A logical component of
MPOA; it resides on a router and
implements NHRP.
N
NHC Next Hop Client. A logical component
of MPOA; it resides with an MPC, is part of
NHRP, and requests and receives address
resolutions.
NHRP Next Hop Resolution Protocol. A
protocol that makes it possible for a router’s
packet-forwarding function to be bypassed.
NHRP is used to resolve the target ATM
address when an MPOA shortcut route is
established.
NHS Next Hop Server. A logical component
of MPOA; it resides on a router, is part of
NHRP, and participates in address
resolution.
O
OC3c Optical Carrier Level 3c.
OAM Operation administration and
maintenance cell. A cell containing ATM
layer management information.
P
package IP address See “floating IP
address”.
PDU Protocol Data Unit. A unit of data
specified in a layer protocol, comprising
protocol control information and layer user
data.
