ATM Configuration and Troubleshooting Guide

Configuring SVCs and PVCs
Planning Your VC Configuration
Chapter 5 63
Planning Your VC Configuration
Be sure to plan a configuration that does not exceed the capacity of your
ATM adapter. Read the section about traffic parameters below.
Summary of Traffic Parameters
Different types of traffic parameters are available, depending on your
ATM adapter.
NOTE See the SAM online help for more details about the traffic parameters
available on your ATM adapter.
ABR Available Bit Rate. Select ABR if you want to optimize the
transmission resources available during data transmission. Configuring
a VC for ABR means that if the network conditions change (for example,
if congestion occurs), the source can adapt its transmission rate
accordingly—based on rate adjustment information from the network
and destination—while remaining within the limits of the three
parameters which you pre-configure:
Peak Rate
Initial Rate
Minimum Rate
You can configure the ABR traffic type on SVCs only if your ATM switch
supports UNI 4.0 and you have configured the UNI version as 4.0 on
your ATM adapter.
CBR Constant Bit Rate. This is for PVCs only. Select CBR traffic if you want
to reserve a specific bandwidth for ATM traffic on this VC. The
bandwidth is defined when the PVC is configured. CBR is defined by this
parameter:
Peak Rate
UBR Unspecified Bit Rate. UBR corresponds to “Best Effort” traffic and is
defined by this parameter:
