Installation
This document describes how to install Peripheral Components Interconnect Multiplexer (PCI MUX) 64-Port
serial adapter product.
The HP AD279A PCI MUX is a high-speed serial communication multiple port product. It combines various
signals for transmission over a single channel, and provides intelligent communication functions to off-load
CPU serial communication processing tasks.

HP AD279A PCI MUX 64-Port Adapter Installation Prerequisites
Before installing the AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter you must plan your setup, and ensure that the
required hardware and software are available.
Planning Your Setup
Read the following information before installing the AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter:
Number and type of components: Each AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter has an External Bus Interface
(EBI) cable from which you can cable up to four port modules. Decide the number of port modules to be
connected to the AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter. The AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter can support up
to four port modules.
Location of components: The first module on the EBI bus can be located up to five feet from the adapter
(the length of the cable that comes with the system). Additional modules can be stacked on top of the first
module using the EBI cables provided with the add-on modules. The EBI cables supplied with the add-on
modules are five feet in length. The total length of the cables from the adapter to the fourth port module is 20
