Peripheral Cabling: Before installing the AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter, ensure that you have cables
to connect the peripherals to the modules. The AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter must be connected to
either DB-25 port module or RJ-45 port module. For more information, see the PCI MUX Support Guide.
Cable Connections: HP AD279A PCI MUX contains RJ45 or DB25 connectors. Ensure that you have cables
of correct length and appropriate connectors to attach the devices properly.
Power Requirements: The first two port modules can obtain power from the EBI bus. The third and fourth
port modules on the EBI bus require external power supply.
NOTE The AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter can support 2 port modules or up to 32 port
configurations without the port module power supply. The port module power supply is
required on the third port module and the fourth port module or 33 through 64 port
configurations.
For more information about peripheral cabling and cable connections, see HP AD278A and
AD279A PCI Multiplexer Support Guide at:

Coupling Port Modules
Stacking additional port modules (two, three, and four) on the first port module is known as coupling port
modules. The port modules expand the number of EIA-232 ports on your system, allowing you to cable
additional peripheral devices such as printers, terminals, or modems to your system. To stack the port
modules, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Position modules at an appropriate location to connect it to the AD279A PCI MUX 64-port adapter.
Step 2. Attach the cable from the adapter to the connector labelled EBI IN on the first port module to be
connected. If you are cabling multiple modules together, attach a daisy-chain cable to the EBI out
connector of the first module. Connect the other end to the EBI IN connector of the second module.
Continue cabling until all modules in the string are cabled, as shown in Figure 1-1.
