Run Oracle OLTP workloads in HP-UX vPars and Integrity VM v6.1.5

HP-UX vPars and Integrity VM best practices while running
Oracle (observed during this performance characterization)
Here are some best practices, observed when running an Oracle workload inside a vPars and an Integrity VM guest.
HP-UX vPars and Integrity VM host best practices
Do not run any workload at the same level as the VSP host. The VSP host should only be used to run Integrity vPars or
VM guests.
Tune the host specifically to run vPars and Integrity VM guests. Refer the tuning recommendations in the System
sizing guidelines for Integrity Virtual Machines deployment white paper.
HP-UX vPars and Integrity VM guest best practices
Use whole disk backing stores that map virtual disks directly to whole physical disks or NPIV-based disks. In these
benchmark efforts, whole disk backing stores were found to perform better than LVM logical volume backing stores
or file-based backing stores.
Creating volume groups by default does 2-way stripping across the disks in a logical volume. An improved
performance on running Oracle OLTP workload was noticed when stripping was done across all the disks in a
logical volume.
Conclusion
This white paper demonstrates that both HP vPars and HP Integrity VM running on the HP Integrity servers are well
suited to running Oracle OLTP workloads. This was demonstrated through various performance and overhead
measurements of an Oracle OLTP configuration running in HP vPars and HP Integrity VM on an HP Integrity BL890c i2
Server Blade (configured to have 8 CPUs and 64 GB of guest memory). Run high performance demanding Oracle
workloads on HP vPars for close to native results. HP Integrity VM is better for dynamic workload that cannot afford
downtime and also want more flexibility. Therefore, HP-UX vPars and Integrity VM provides the ideal platform with the
choice to match your mission critical database requirement.
