HP Virtual Connect for c-Class BladeSystem Version 2.30 User Guide
Server management 127
Serial Number (Logical) Settings
The serial number (logical) setting feature enables users to add a serial number (logical) and UUID
(logical) to server profiles. By configuring Virtual Connect to assign serial numbers (logical), a profile can
present a single serial number regardless of the physical server. With these configuration values added to
server profiles, software that is licensed to a particular server, based on one or both of these values, can
be migrated to new server hardware without re-licensing the software for the new server hardware. This
features prevents the user from having to reinstall serial number sensitive software after a system recovery.
If a user needs to access the physical serial number of a server blade, the OA displays both the physical
and serial numbers (logical).
After server profile creation, the following guidelines apply:
• Serial numbers (logical) can be changed from factory default to VC-assigned.
• Factory default serial numbers cannot be changed to serial numbers (logical).
• User-defined serial number (logical) ranges can be expanded.
• User-defined serial number (logical) ranges cannot be reduced.
• All components must be at the required versions or the feature does not function:
o OA, v2.20 or higher
o iLO, v1.60 or higher
For additional information on required firmware versions and to download firmware upgrades,
see the HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/bladesystemupdates).
CAUTION: The use of Serial Number (Logical) Settings might prevent the proper operation of
software designed to track servers by serial number or UUID. Do not enable this feature until
you consider and understand the impact to the entire software environment in which the
servers operate. This impact includes, but is not limited to, warranty service, asset tracking,
server deployment, and software licensing.
