HP Virtual Connect Migration Guide

Technical white paper | Virtual Connect Migration Techniques
2
Introduction
The purpose of this document is to assist users in migrating an existing Virtual Connect Domain configuration to new HP
Virtual Connect Flex-10/10D Modules or Virtual Connect FlexFabric-20/40 F8 Modules after replacement of older HP VC-
Enet modules.
This document will address the relevant differences between the older and newer modules pertaining to the configuration
and will outline the steps necessary to capture the configuration of the existing VC Domain and modify it to apply to a new
VC Domain. This document will also describe a simple case of Server Profile preservation. Lastly, this document will
describe additional factors to consider when migrating from VC 1/10 to Flex-10/10D modules such as Flex-10 capable NICs
in G6 or higher blades, Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager, Enclosure and Blade Firmware levels.
Overview of the Virtual Connect Modules
The HP Virtual Connect family of BladeSystem c-Class interconnects provides IT Administrators with the simplest way to
define the connectivity needs of the servers running the business’ applications. Shared Uplink Sets define the network
trunks as they’re presented by the datacenter switches, and Server Profiles define the server’s connectivity and personality
on the fabric.
Several Virtual Connect modules have been introduced for the BladeSystem c-Class product portfolio over the years, each
providing uplink capabilities to match the datacenter switching infrastructure.
HP 1/10Gb Virtual Connect Ethernet Module
The Virtual Connect 1/10Gb Ethernet module provides 1Gb downlinks to servers and a combination of 1Gb and 10Gb
uplinks.
HP 1/10Gb-F Virtual Connect Ethernet Module
The HP 1/10Gb-F Virtual Connect module provides a different mix of 1/10Gb uplinks while still providing 1Gb downlinks to
the server bays.
