3 Basic operation
Basic operating information includes:
Powering on / powering off
Updating system firmware
Powering on/powering off
IMPORTANT:
System devices must be powered on and powered off in a specific sequence. If devices are powered
on or powered off out of sequence, the server may not properly discover the storage or hard drives
might be marked as failed.

In general, when powering on system devices, first apply power to the devices farthest away from
the server, and then, after each device completes its power-on routine, move toward the server. For
example:
1. Hard drive storage enclosures
2. Array controller enclosures
3. Switches
4. Servers
In general, when powering off devices, first remove power to the server, and then after each device
is powered off, move toward the hard drive enclosures. For example:
1. Servers
2. Switches
3. Array controller enclosures
4. Hard drive storage enclosures
Updating system firmware
After installing hardware and powering on the enclosure for the first time, be sure to verify that all
components have the latest firmware. For firmware and software updates, see the HP support website
