Recommended process for updating a component's firmware
1. Obtain a flash update recommendation for the component using the -fr or --flashrec
command option. For any component, the firmware update task is closely associated with the
flash recommendation task. Therefore, it is always a best practice to run the flash
recommendation task before performing the firmware update task.
2. Depending on the update recommendation, do one of the following:
• If the proposed action of the flash recommendation is UPGRADE and the severity is
MANDATORY, go to step 3.
• If the proposed action is UPGRADE and the severity is RECOMMENDED, you can
optionally perform step 3. However, HP recommends that you perform step 3 for better
performance.
• If the proposed action is NONE or DOWNGRADE and the severity is MANDATORY,
go to step 4.
• If the proposed action is NONE or DOWNGRADE and the severity is RECOMMENDED,
you can optionally perform step 4.
3. Enter the following command to update the firmware of a component: #hpsp_fmt --flash
-c <component name>. Then go to step 5.
4. Perform the flash operation with the —force option (—flash –c <component name>
--force).
5. After the firmware has been successfully updated, if the status from the flash update operation
displays Success (Reboot Pending), reboot the node to activate the component’s
updated firmware.
You can defer the reboot operation if you want to update the firmware on other components
first.
NOTE: For some components in the StoreAll 9730 and IBRIX X9720, prequisites must be
addressed before performing a firmware update. The FMT lists the prerequisites and prompts
for the user’s confirmation that prerequisites have been addressed before performing the
update.
The following sections show examples of updating firmware on each supported component
on the StoreAll 9730 and IBRIX X9720 platforms. The examples assume the flash update
recommendation subcommand (in step 1) has already been executed.
