HP Storage Platform Firmware Management Tool for StoreAll User Guide

Storage enclosure hard disk drives
CAUTION: The prerequisite measures to be followed before performing firmware update operation
on enclosure HDDs:
Storage disk drive update is an OFFLINE process. All host and array I/O must be stopped
prior to the update.
To avoid spurious failure indications and potential system crashes, you must suspend hardware
monitoring during the update process. You should execute hpspmonControl --pause on
both servers in the couplet before performing the flash operation. You should then make sure
to execute hpspmonControl --resume on both servers in the couplet after the flash
operation is complete.
Do not cycle power or restart devices during a firmware update
Ensure that the storage system configuration is not being reconfigured during a firmware
update.
Ensure that no other user is performing administrative functions on the storage system.
Ensure that all file systems on the storage controller are unmounted. Failure to comply may
result in the operating system failing.
Best practices for enclosure HDD firmware update
See the Administrator Guide for your platform for the procedures for each step outlined below.
1. Stop file services (stop I/O to all the devices exported/accessed from MSA) on both the
servers.
2. Unmount all the file systems on both the servers.
3. Update the HDD firmware from either the first or second server.
4. Mount the file systems back on both servers.
5. Start file services (start I/O) on both servers.
