Linking Application Agent to othersoftware
Application Agentcan be linked to backup management and cluster software, and automating tape
backups. This section describes the software products that can be linked to Application Agent.
Backup management software
The following tape backup management softwares can be used with Application Agent:
• NetBackup
• Backup Exec
Cluster software
The following cluster software products can be used with Application Agent:

Both standard and MNS quorums are available in Microsoft Cluster Service.

Virtual environments supported by Application Agent
This section describes the virtual environments that are supported by CLI for Application Agent.
VMware ESX
Application Agent can run on guest OSs of VMware ESX Server 3.x, VMware ESXi Server 3.x, ESX
Server 3i Version 3.5, VMware ESX 4.0, VMware ESXi 4.0, VMware ESX 4.1, and VMware ESXi
4.1. If you want to use VMware ESX Server 3.5 or ESX Server 3i Version 3.5, apply Update 4.
When you use VMware ESX 4.0, VMware ESXi 4.0, VMware ESX 4.1, or VMware ESXi 4.1,
Application Agent can run on a guest OS only on the database server. Backup servers configured
on guest OSs are supported only when all of the following conditions are met:
• The backup target is a file system or SQL Server.
• There is only one generation for the secondary volume.
• The configuration does not recognize the second volume dynamically.
For details on how to set up the configuration that does not recognize secondary volumes dynamically,
see “Settings for using secondary volume dynamic recognition” on page 130.
If the above conditions are not met, backup server on a server running in a non-virtual environment.
Do not concurrently execute Application Agent functionality and VMware live migration, such as
VMware vMotion. If you concurrently execute Application Agent functionality and VMware live
migration, execution of the Application Agent functionality might fail. If the execution of an Application
Agent function fails, take action according to the message shown in the troubleshooting information.
Application Agent does not support VMware HA (High Availability). Backup operations are supported
only for raw LUNs for which raw device mapping is used in physical compatibility mode.
When applying a VSS correction module that includes hotfix 940349, apply the module to all servers
that use VSS.
