NOTE:
Only Host Data Collector can be installed on a separate computer.
Device Manager agent
The Device Manager agent component collects information about hosts or storage systems that
it then reports to the Device Manager server. This component is required for the following opera-
tions:
Managing copy pairs
The Device Manager agent is required when creating a copy pair, changing the copy pair
configuration, or changing the copy pair status in Device Manager or Replication Manager
in conjunction with RAID Manager.
Acquiring performance information
The Device Manage agent is required for acquiring performance information about P9500,
XP24000/XP20000, and XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 by using the CIM/WBEM function
of Device Manager.
RAID Manager
This component controls copy pairs in a storage system.
RAID Manager is required to control the configuration and the status of a copy pair in Device
Manager.
GUI
This component provides a Web-based graphical user interface.
CLI
These components provide a character-based interface. Using CLI improves the efficiency when
a system is initially installed or the same setting changes are applied to a large number of com-
puters.
Network security configuration
P9500, XP24000/XP20000, XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 and XP1024/XP128 come equipped
with a service processor, which is usually abbreviated as SVP. The SVP has two Ethernet adapters.
The first adapter is for a private (internal) Ethernet LAN, which is intended for intra-array
communications only. The Service Processor (SVP) is the only user-accessible device that can access
the internal LAN. The second adapter is used for other applications to communicate with the SVP.
This LAN is referred to as the public LAN, because it is visible to other computers outside the array.
Device Manager uses the public LAN to communicate with a storage system and with an SVP used
to make configuration changes to a storage system.
WARNING!
P9500, XP24000/XP20000, XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 and XP1024/XP128 have a public LAN
and a private LAN. Device Manager uses the public LAN to communicate with the SVP about the
array and configuration changes.
Do not
under any circumstances attach the private LAN to an
external network because this can cause serious problems on the array.
