HP P9000 Business Copy for Mainframe Systems User Guide (AV400-96386, October 2011)

Triggers for change of pair status to Split
What happens to pairs in V-Split or SP-Pend status depends on the system option mode 459 (ON
or OFF; OFF is the default) and whether the T-VOL (or the pool volume associated with the T-VOL)
is an internal or external volume.

All differential data is copied to cache in the storage system, and then
the pair status changes to Split.

All differential data is copied to cache in the storage system, and then
de-staged to the external storage system. The pair status then changes
to Split.

When T-VOL is the volume of Thin Provisioning Z, this function cannot be performed.
Four options are available when splitting a pair:
Steady split, which is a typical pair split operation in which any remaining differential data
from the S-VOL is copied to the T-VOL and then the pair is split.
Quick split, in which the pair is immediately split so that the T-VOL is immediately available
for read and write I/O. Any remaining differential data is copied to the T-VOL in the
background.
At-Time Split, in which all pairs in a copy group are split at the same time. Split time indicates
the time when you want to mirror S-VOL data in the T-VOLs. Business Continuity Manager is
required.
Split all pairs in a consistency group. This operation requires PPRC and is similar to the At-Time
Split using Business Continuity Manager. However, with the PPRC operation, the split-time
cannot be specified, and the operation can only be used with Quick Split. Steady Split is
unavailable for this operation. See “Pair operations using PPRC” (page 56) for more
information.
Prerequisite information
Pair status must be one of the following:
Duplex when splitting an existing pair
Simplex when creating and immediately splitting a pair
When splitting an existing pair, the operation completes faster by stopping host access to the
S-VOL before the operation.
