At pricing similar to some Ethernet hubs, the Compaq 5114 Desktop Ethernet Switch offers a simple plug and play
solution to network performance problems, support for 100 Mb/s devices, and a high return on investment.
Performance by Design
The Compaq 5114 Desktop Ethernet Switch provides an easy and cost-effective way for users to enhance network
performance. No re-cabling or network interface card upgrades are necessary.
As a drop-in performance enhancement, the Compaq 5114 is designed specifically to speed up workstation network
access by segmenting traffic and dedicating bandwidth to the desktop.
10 Mb/s of Ethernet bandwidth is provided to each user, increasing performance from 10 Mb/s to an aggregate of 320
Mb/s of throughput. Full-duplex operation further increases performance by doubling the effective data transmission
rate–20 Mb/s on 10Base-T connections and 200 Mb/s on 10/100Base-TX connections. The 5114 automatically
negotiates full-/half-duplex mode for each port when connected to a PC, server, or other networking device.
Ease of Use and Setup
Installation is as simple as plugging it in. The 5114 automatically configures itself and begins switching Ethernet traffic
immediately.
Twelve 10Base-T ports are provided to attach directly to PCs. Two 10/100 Mb/s dual-speed, auto-negotiating ports
enable users to connect to a workgroup server, printer, or other dedicated network device. One of the 10/100 Mb/s
ports is designed to serve as a high-speed uplink to the corporate network.
Advantages of Switching
An Ethernet switch enables the network to deliver full 10 Mb/s bandwidth to each user because each port is its own
Ethernet segment. Also, an Ethernet switch offers both full- and half-duplex operation and 100 Mb/s uplinks allowing
for extension of network investment well into the future.
