1 Welcome ● What's new? ● Finding information After you set up and register the computer, it is important to take the following steps: ● Set up HP QuickWeb (select models only)—Immediately access the Internet, widgets, and communication programs without launching your main operating system. What's new? Beats Audio (select models only) Beats Audio is an enhanced audio profile that provides a deep, controlled bass while maintaining a clear sound. Beats Audio is enabled by default. ▲ To enable or disable the Beats Audio bass settings, press fn+b. NOTE: You can also view and control the bass settings through the Windows® operating system. Select Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Beats Audio Control Panel to view and control the bass properties.

Top TouchPad Component (1) 6 Description TouchPad light ● Off: The TouchPad is on. ● Amber: The TouchPad is off. (2) TouchPad on/off button Quickly double-tap the TouchPad on/off button to turn the TouchPad on or off. (3) TouchPad zone Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen. Component (1) Description Power button ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the button briefly to initiate Sleep. ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep. ● When the computer is in Hibernation, press the button briefly to exit Hibernation.
Keys Component 10 Description (1) Action keys Execute frequently used system functions. (2) fn key Executes frequently used system functions when pressed in combination with, the num lk key, or the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu. (4) Windows applications key Displays a shortcut menu for items beneath the pointer.
Front Component Speakers (2) Description Produce sound.
Right side Component (1) Description Digital Media Slot Supports the following digital card formats: ● MultiMediaCard ● Secure Digital (SD) Card ● Secure Digital High Capacity Card (SDHC) ● Secure Digital Extended Capacity (SDxC) Supports mini versions by use of an adapter (adapter is not included). (2) Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces sound when connected to optional powered stereo speakers, headphones, earbuds, a headset, or television audio.
Left side Component Description (1) External monitor port Connects an external VGA monitor or projector. (2) Power connector Connects an AC adapter. (3) AC/battery light ● White: The computer is connected to external power and the battery is fully charged. ● Amber: The computer is connected to external power and the battery is charging. ● Off: The computer is not connected to external power. (4) Vent Enables airflow to cool internal components.
Display Component Description (1) WLAN antennas (2) Send and receive wireless signals to communicate with wireless local area networks (WLAN). (2) WWAN antennas (2) Send and receive wireless signals to communicate with wireless wide-area networks (WWAN). (3) Internal microphone Records sound. (4) Webcam Records video and captures still photographs. To use the webcam, select Start > All Programs > HP > HP Camera. (5) Webcam light On: The webcam is in use.
Bottom Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) Battery/service door latch Releases the battery from the battery bay and the service door from the computer. (3) Service door Provides access to the hard drive bay, a memory module slot, the subscriber identity module (SIM) slot, and the wireless local area network (WLAN) module.
3 HP QuickWeb (select models only) ● Starting HP QuickWeb The HP QuickWeb environment provides a fun and engaging way to perform many of your favorite activities. Your computer is ready to go within seconds of starting QuickWeb, allowing you to rapidly access the Internet, widgets, and communication programs. Simply press the QuickWeb button and then start browsing the Internet, communicating with Skype, and exploring other HP QuickWeb programs.
Starting HP QuickWeb ▲ To start HP QuickWeb, press the QuickWeb button when the computer is off or in Hibernation. The following table explains the different behaviors of the QuickWeb button. Key Behavior QuickWeb button ● When the computer is off or in Hibernation, opens HP QuickWeb. ● When the computer is in Microsoft Windows, opens the default Web browser. ● When the computer is in HP QuickWeb, opens the Web browser.
4 Networking ● Using an Internet service provider (ISP) ● Connecting to a wireless network NOTE: Internet hardware and software features vary depending on computer model and your location. Your computer may support one or both of the following types of Internet access: 18 ● Wireless—For mobile Internet access, you can use a wireless connection. Refer to Connecting to an existing WLAN on page 20 or Setting up a new WLAN network on page 20.
Using an Internet service provider (ISP) Before you can connect to the Internet, you must establish an ISP account. Contact a local ISP to purchase Internet service and a modem. The ISP will help set up the modem, install a network cable to connect your wireless computer to the modem, and test the Internet service. NOTE: Your ISP will give you a user ID and password to access the Internet. Record this information and store it in a safe place.
Connecting to a wireless network Wireless technology transfers data across radio waves instead of wires.
Configuring a wireless router For help in setting up a WLAN, refer to the information provided by your router manufacturer or your ISP. The Windows operating system also provides tools to help you set up a new wireless network. To use the Windows tools to set up your network, select Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network > Set up a new network. Then follow the on-screen instructions.

Using the keyboard Identifying the hotkeys A hotkey is a combination of the fn key (1) and either the esc key (2), or the b key (3). To use a hotkey: ▲ Briefly press the fn key, and then briefly press the second key of the hotkey combination. Description fn+esc Displays system information. fn+b Enables or disables Beats Audio bass settings (select models only). Beats Audio is an enhanced audio profile that provides a deep, controlled bass while maintaining a clear sound.
CAUTION: Use extreme care when making changes in Setup Utility. Errors can prevent the computer from operating properly. Icon Key Description f1 Opens Help and Support, which provides information about your Windows operating system and computer, answers to questions and tutorials, and updates to your computer. Help and Support also provides automated troubleshooting and links to support specialists. f2 Decreases the screen brightness level incrementally when you hold down this key.
Using pointing devices NOTE: In addition to the pointing devices included with your computer, you can use an external USB mouse (purchased separately) by connecting it to one of the USB ports on the computer. Setting pointing device preferences Use Mouse Properties in Windows to customize settings for pointing devices, such as button configuration, click speed, and pointer options. To access Mouse Properties, select Start > Devices and Printers.
Navigating To move the pointer, slide one finger across the TouchPad in the direction you want the pointer to go. Selecting Use the left and right TouchPad buttons like the corresponding buttons on an external mouse. Tapping (or clicking) Tap or double-tap the TouchPad as you would with the left button an external mouse. NOTE: 26 Tapping is enabled at the factory.
Using TouchPad gestures The TouchPad supports a variety of gestures. To use TouchPad gestures, place two fingers on the TouchPad at the same time. NOTE: TouchPad gestures are not supported in all programs. To view the demonstration of a gesture: 1. Click the Show hidden icons icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar. 2. Right-click the Synaptics Pointing Device icon 3. Click a gesture to activate the demonstration. , and then click TouchPad Properties.
Pinching/Zooming Pinching allows you to zoom in or out on images or text. ● Zoom in by placing two fingers together on the TouchPad, and then moving them apart. ● Zoom out by placing two fingers apart on the TouchPad, and then moving them together. NOTE: 28 Pinching/zooming is enabled at the factory.
6 Maintenance ● Inserting or removing the battery ● Replacing or upgrading the hard drive ● Replacing the memory module Inserting or removing the battery NOTE: For additional information on using the battery, refer to the HP Notebook Reference Guide. Inserting the battery To insert the battery: ▲ Insert the battery (1) into the battery bay and rotate it downward (2) until it is firmly seated.
Removing the battery To remove the battery: CAUTION: Removing a battery that is the sole power source for the computer can cause loss of information. To prevent loss of information, save your work and initiate Hibernation or shut down the computer through Windows before removing the battery. 30 1. Slide the battery/service door latch (1) to release the battery. 2. Pivot the battery (2) upward and lift it out of the computer (3).
Replacing or upgrading the hard drive CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Shut down the computer before removing the hard drive from the hard drive bay. Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is on, in the Sleep state, or in Hibernation. If you are not sure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on by pressing the power button. Then shut down the computer through the operating system. 8. 32 Pull up on the hard drive tab (3) and then remove the hard drive (4) from the hard drive bay at an angle.
Installing the hard drive 1. Insert the rubber spacers on the drive into the openings (1) in the hard drive bay. 2. Lower the hard drive (2) into the hard drive bay. 3. Replace the Phillips screw (3). 4. Connect the hard drive connector cable (4) to the computer. 5. Lower the service door onto the computer (1) and then slide the door (2) toward the battery bay until the battery/service door latch snaps into place. 6. Replace the battery.
7. Reconnect external power and external devices. 8. Turn on the computer. Replacing the memory module The computer has one memory module compartment. The capacity of the computer can be upgraded by upgrading the existing memory module in the memory module slot. WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock and damage to the equipment, unplug the power cord and remove all batteries before installing a memory module. CAUTION: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components.
b. Grasp the edge of the memory module (2), and then gently pull the memory module out of the memory module slot. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges only. Do not touch the components on the memory module. To protect a memory module after removal, place it in an electrostatic-safe container. 6. Insert the new memory module: CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges only.
c. Gently press the memory module (3) down, applying pressure to both the left and right edges of the memory module, until the retention clips snap into place. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, be sure that you do not bend the memory module. 7. Replace the service door (see Replacing or upgrading the hard drive on page 31). 8. Replace the battery. 9. Reconnect external power and external devices. 10. Turn on the computer.
7 Backup and recovery ● Restore ● Creating restore media ● Performing a system restore ● Backing up and recovering your information Your computer includes tools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and restore it if ever needed.
Restore In the event of hard drive failure, to restore your system to its factory image you will need a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive that you can create using HP Recovery Manager. HP recommends that you use this software to create either a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive immediately after software setup.
Performing a system restore HP Recovery Manager software allows you to repair or restore the computer to its original factory state. HP Recovery Manager works from recovery discs, a recovery flash drive, or from a dedicated recovery partition (select models only) on the hard drive. NOTE: A system restore needs to be performed if the computer hard drive has failed or if all attempts to correct any functional computer issues fail. A system restore should be used as a final attempt to correct computer issues.
Restoring using the restore media 1. If possible, back up all personal files. 2. Insert the first recovery disc into the optical drive on your computer or an optional external optical drive, and then restart the computer. – or – Insert the recovery flash drive into a USB port on your computer, and then restart the computer. NOTE: If the computer does not automatically restart in the HP Recovery Manager, the computer boot order needs to be changed. 3. Press f9 at system bootup. 4.
Backing up and recovering your information It is very important to back up your files and keep any new software in a safe place. As you add new software and data files, continue to create backups on a regular basis. How completely you are able to recover your system depends on how recent your backup is. NOTE: A recovery from your most recent backup needs to be performed if the computer has a virus attack or if any major system components fail.
Using Windows Backup and Restore Guidelines: ● Be sure that the computer is connected to AC power before you start the backup process. ● Allow enough time to complete the backup process. Depending on file sizes, it may take over an hour. To create a backup: 1. Select Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions to schedule and create a backup. NOTE: Windows® includes the User Account Control feature to improve the security of the computer.
Create a system restore point 1. Select Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System. 2. In the left pane, click System Protection. 3. Click the System Protection tab. 4. Follow the on-screen instructions. Restore to a previous date and time To revert to a restore point (created at a previous date and time), when the computer was functioning optimally, follow these steps: 1. Select Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System. 2. In the left pane, click System Protection. 3.

Input power The power information in this section may be helpful if you plan to travel internationally with the computer. The computer operates on DC power, which can be supplied by an AC or a DC power source. The AC power source must be rated at 100–240 V, 50–60 Hz. Although the computer can be powered from a standalone DC power source, it should be powered only with an AC adapter or a DC power source supplied and approved by HP for use with this computer.
