Preface The HP Insight Recovery 6.2 User Guide contains information on installation, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting HP Insight Recovery 6.2. Publishing history The latest publication date and part number indicate the current edition. Table 1 Publishing History Publication Date Part Number Edition Changes October 2010 5900–0863 1 This is the initial release of the HP Insight Recovery 6.
1 Overview HP Insight Recovery is the recovery management component of HP Insight Dynamics that provides disaster recovery protection for logical servers configured and managed by the HP Insight Dynamics Virtualization Manager. Logical servers that are included in an HP Insight Recovery configuration are referred to as DR Protected logical servers. A DR Protected logical server can run on a physical machine (C-class blade), or on a virtual machine hosted by a hypervisor.
Table 1-1 The HP Insight Recovery configuration process Step Description 1 The local and remote sites are defined in this step, including naming the sites, designating Central Management Servers (CMS) and assigning Primary Site and Recovery Site roles. 2 The local and remote Storage Management Servers are configured in this step. These servers manage Storage Replication Groups at local and remote sites respectively. 3 The Storage Replication Group information is configured in this step.
2 Installing and configuring HP Insight Recovery Installation and configuration overview The following HP Insight Recovery installation and configuration overview includes links to information on each step in the process. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Confirm that all HP Insight Recovery installation and configuration prerequisites have been met — see “Installation and configuration prerequisites” (page 11) for more information.
Networking setup It is assumed that networking links are present between the Primary Site and the Recovery Site. You can use HP Insight Recovery in a variety of networking configurations, but it is important that you take note of the following HP Insight Recovery networking configuration parameters: • HP Insight Recovery assumes that the Primary and Recovery Sites operate in a mode with workloads running simultaneously at both sites, but with DR Protected workloads running at the Primary Site only.
• • If a DR Protected logical server at the Primary Site is VC hosted, the replicated boot and data LUNs on the array at the Recovery Site must be presented to the corresponding recovery logical server. If a DR Protected logical server at the Primary Site is VM hosted, the replicated boot and data LUNs on the array at the Recovery Site must be presented to the VM host (for example, ESX) at the Recovery Site that is targeted to run the recovery logical server (for example, ESX guest).
NOTE: For information on storage setup of cross technology logical servers (logical servers capable of being VC hosted or VM hosted), refer to Dynamic workload movement with BladeSystem Matrix: Fluid movement between physical and virtual resources for flexibility and cost-effective recovery available at: http:// www.hp.com/go/insightrecovery NOTE: For a list of supported storage, refer to the HP Insight Software 6.2 Support Matrix available at: http://www.hp.
Recovery Site logical server setup 1. 2. 3. Deactivate and gracefully shutdown the logical servers in the Recovery Groups at the Primary Site, using Virtualization Manager. Using the appropriate storage management tools, for example, HP StorageWorks Command View EVA, failover the storage associated with the Recovery Groups to the Recovery Site. If there are VM hosted logical servers in the Recovery Groups: a.
HP Insight Recovery user interface overview The HP Insight Recovery user interface displays the following tabs: • Home Displays a list of the HP Insight Recovery configuration tabs; Sites, Storage Management Servers, Storage Replication Groups, Recovery Groups, and the Jobs tab, which is used for monitoring HP Insight Recovery operations. There is a brief description of the tasks that can be completed under each of the tabs.
3 Testing and failover operations This chapter contains sections on testing Recovery Groups, planned failovers and unplanned failovers using the Change local site to Primary Site and Change local site to Recovery Site operations.
Failover operations This section explains the difference between planned and unplanned failovers, and provides the procedure to follow in either case. Planned failover A planned failover typically involves an expected outage at the Primary Site. For example, a planned failover might be necessary to perform scheduled maintenance, or to react to a severe weather forecast. It can also be used for testing purposes.
HP Insight Recovery is able to prevent split-brain from occurring during an unplanned failover, by regulating the auto-power configuration of managed nodes (whether virtual or physical) that are assigned to DR Protected logical servers so that they do not automatically power up after an outage. If, for example, the Primary Site loses power and site failover is invoked, the original Primary Site will not resume running the DR Protected logical servers when power is restored.
4 Issues, limitations and suggested actions Issues and limitations of this release are listed below. The following categories are used: Limitations Limitations of the implemented functions and features of this release. Major issues Issues that may significantly affect functionality and usability in this release. Minor issues Issues that may be noticeable but do not have a significant impact on functionality or usability.
Identical configuration of logical servers between sites Primary and recovery logical servers must be configured with identical parameters, except for the logical server name, using the Virtualization Manager. There is a potential for discrepancies, between the Primary Site and the Recovery Site, in the values of attributes that are not included in the HP Insight Recovery user interface configuration screens.
Suggested actions: The mxtool command can be run manually to remove the SIM tools. The names of the tools are Insight Recovery_Failover and Insight Recovery_Group validation. For example, if the name of the Storage Management Server is stgmgmtA.cup.hp.com then the names of the tools will be STGMGMTA_CUP_HP_COM_Insight Recovery_Failover and STGMGMTA_CUP_HP_COM_Insight Recovery_Group validation.
5 Troubleshooting This chapter is divided into three sections: • “Configuration troubleshooting” (page 25) • “HP Insight Recovery troubleshooting” (page 28) • “HP Insight Recovery log files” (page 32) Configuration troubleshooting To troubleshoot HP Insight Recovery configuration operations, take note of any on-screen error messages, then review this section for relevant information. You can also view the mxdomainmgr log files for additional information.
— — 26 The HP Logical Server Automation service was not running when Recovery Groups were configured in HP Insight Recovery. The logical server was being actively managed when the HP Insight Recovery configuration was invoked (logical server modification, logical server activation, or logical server deactivation was in progress). • No configuration operation can be run Possible causes include: — A Change local site to Primary Site or Change local site to Recovery Site operation is in progress.
Error message Error: Invalid storage manager username and/or domain name. Cause The sign-in credentials for the server stored in the Insight Dynamics user interface do not include the user name specified as part of the Storage Management Server configuration operation in HP Insight Recovery. Action For the server specified, ensure that the sign-in credentials stored in the Insight Dynamics user interface include the credentials for the user name specified.
Error message Insight Recovery logical server configuration inconsistent with Insight Dynamics logical server configuration. Cause HP Insight Recovery was not able to communicate with Insight Dynamics to confirm that a logical server is being managed by HP Insight Recovery. Action Delete the Recovery Group containing the logical server from HP Insight Recovery. Confirm that the HP Logical Server Automation Service is running. Ensure that the logical server is not being actively modified by any user.
1. 2. Refresh the server resources to reflect any environment configuration changes. In the Virtualization Manager screen, select Tools→Logical Servers→Refresh. Select Virtual Connect Resources and Virtual Machine Resources, then click the Refresh button. Retry the HP Insight Recovery Job. If the job fails again, proceed with troubleshooting by examining the appropriate subsystem.
For additional information on troubleshooting refer to the HP Insight Virtualization Manager 6.2 Software with Logical Server Management: User Guide available at: www.hp.com/go/insightdynamics/ docs. To troubleshoot other subsystems, refer to the HP BladeSystem Matrix Troubleshooting Guide available at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com - use the Business Support Center search function to locate this document. Once the problem has been corrected, return to HP Insight Recovery.
If a Recovery Group was deleted due to the re-configuration of a logical server, recreate it now with the re-configured logical server. The following troubleshooting issues are addressed in this section: • Failover job failed because storage failover failed Possible causes include: — Storage Management Servers were not available at the time of the failover. • Failover job succeeded but recovery logical servers are not activated.
Error message Failover job succeeds but certain logical servers are not activated Cause Recovery Groups containing those logical servers may be in Maintenance Mode. Action Disable Maintenance Mode on the Recovery Groups and rerun the failover operation. Also look at the lsdt.log file located in the logs directory where HP Insight Recovery is installed.
