Ultrium Cartridges
Caution: Do not bulk erase Ultrium formatted cartridges. This will destroy
pre-recorded servo information, and make the cartridges unusable.
DLT and SDLT Cartridges
In addition to the general inspection listed on page 123, you can further determine
if DLT or SDLT tapes have been damaged by doing the following:
Verify that the spring-loaded hub (2 in Figure 74 on page 125) is centered
within the circular opening on the bottom of the tape cartridge.
Gently press the hub and make sure that it springs back into place.
Visually inspect the tape for a broken, unseated, or misaligned tape leader (1
in Figure 74 on page 125 and Figure 76 on page 126). If the loop at the end of
the leader is not presented correctly, the drive can fail to engage, or drop, the
leader. If used, a dropped leader cartridge can damage the drive.
Also check for these faulty leaders (see Figure 75 on page 125):
Swallowed leaders - the leader is completely wound around into the
cartridge, leaving no loop for the buckling link to catch.
Torn leader loops - the loop is torn creating an opening, and the
buckling link fails to grab the loop, failing to transport the tape into
the drive.
Creased leader loops - the loop is stuck and the cartridge leader
cannot unwind into the drive. As the drive leader’s buckling link
engages the cartridge leader loop, it can detach the loop, and drag it
into the drive causing damage.
To check the leader position:
Press in the door lock (3 in Figure 74 on page 125) to release the cartridge
door. While pressing in the door lock, push the tab down to open the door. Be
careful not to touch the tape after opening the door. Ensure that the leader is in
the correct position (1 in Figure 74 on page 125 and Figure 76 on page 126).
